With the release of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shinning Pearl, trainers familiar with the three generations that came before the game will likely be on the lookout for their favorite Pokémon. Once they have unlocked the National Dex, the Pokémon from the previous regions will be available to catch above and below ground. For example, Tyranitar cannot be found in the wild; however, trainers with the Brilliant Diamond version of the game will be able to find both of its previous evolutions in the Underground.

Originally released in Pokémon Gold and Silver, Tyranitar is a Rock and Dark dual-type Pokémon that evolves from the Rock and Ground dual-type Larvitar after it evolves into Pupitar. Even though Tyranitar is not available to catch, it is fairly easy to attain by catching either Larvitar or Pupitar and leveling it up. Both of these Pokémon only appear after unlocking the National Dex. They will appear in the wild above level 55, which is the level Pupitar evolves into Tyranitar, so both will be ready to evolve to their next stage after gaining one level. As Tyranitar's evolutionary line is exclusive to Brilliant Diamond, trainers with the Shining Pearl version of the game will need to trade to acquire them.

As this guide focuses on adding Tyranitar to trainers' teams, only catching Pupitar will be covered since it's closer to evolving into Tyranitar. To catch Pupitar, trainers will need to proceed to Big Bluff Cavern, which can be reached on the Grand Underground paths near Eterna City, Hearthome City, Veilstone City, or the Rocky Cave found under Sunnyshore City and the Battle Zone. It's recommended to stock up on Dusk Balls and Ultra Balls, along with some Quick Balls, in addition to having a Pokémon that knows False Swipe and can use non-electric status effect moves to help increase the odds of catching them.

How to Use the Secret Base to Help Catch Pupitar

Secret Base Pokemon BDSP to Get Tyranitar

What trainers will want to do after finding a Rocky Cave or the Big Bluff Cavern is to move their secret base nearby using a Digger Drill. Then after entering it, trainers can prioritize placing Rock-type statues that are Shiny/Jade colored, including legendary Pokémon from the Ramanas Park or the final evolution form. These statues will boost the number of rock-type Pokémon that appear in the underground caverns, making Pupitar more likely to appear. If trainers do not have enough Stone-type statues, they can also use Ground-type for the same effect or dig for more. It's worth pointing out that only one Pokémon type's spawn rate can be boosted at a time.

After placing statues, trainers will need to enter, look for Pupitar, and exit if it does not spawn. This process can be redone immediately and repeated to get a new batch of Pokémon until Pupitar appears. After catching Pupitar, trainers will need to level it up one time to evolve into Tyranitar, which can be done with a Rare Candy or earning approximately 12,000 XP with Pupitar.
