Genshin Impact’s 1.6 new map, the Golden Apple Archipelago, offers tons of new events and games for players to entertain themselves with. Along with an entirely new region, new items, and the new boat mechanic, players also have an entirely new boss to defeat.
Maguu Kenki can be found on the central island of the Golden Apple Archipelago, and players are required to defeat him to progress with the main story quest of 1.6. He can be unlocked automatically by playing through the 1.6 archipelago story quest, and then can be challenged repeatedly after his initial defeat.
How to Fight Maguu Kenki in Genshin Impact
As Maguu Kenki is a Normal Boss, players need 40 original resin to claim their rewards once the fight is done. Doing so will grant Adventure EXP, Mora, Companionship EXP, Artifacts, as well as Ascension Materials. One of these new materials is the Marionette Core, an ascension material rumored to be required for upcoming Inazuman characters like Kazuha.
Maguu Kenki is a humanoid automaton, who uses a puppet to help him land blows on the player. Here are his main abilities and attacks:
- Oni Mask: Uses his large mask in battle. He can either use it as a shield, use it to shove the player forward, or have it explode to deal damage to the player.
- Iai Shadowrush: Rushes towards the player while drawing its sword to deal either Physical or Elemental damage.
- Whirlwind Slash: Charges before quickly slashing around himself, dealing Anemo Damage.
- Flowing Water: Slashes three times, sending waves towards the player that deal Hydro Damage.
- Dual Sword Burst: Summons an additional sword, charging up before slamming the ground to deal wide AoE Anemo or Cryo damage.
Once Maguu Kenki reaches 75% HP or lower, he begins to utilize his phantoms. These phantoms have their own special moves and attacks:
- Consecutive Slash: Maguu Kenki teleports away, leaving a phantom in his place. The phantom and Maguu Kenki attack consecutively.
- Whirlwind Slash: A phantom drags the player towards itself, slashing rapidly dealing Anemo Damage.
- Flowing Water: Maguu Kenki sends three Hydro slashes that follow the player. A phantom is summoned right after that deals Anemo Damage.
Maguu Kenki’s phantoms are impervious to damage, so players should run from the phantoms and focus on attacking Maguu Kenki himself. His shield is triggered by attack distance, so ranged attacks from Catalyst or Bow users can be tricky. However, any attacks can be used effectively as long as the player is located within melee range of the boss. Players should use melee characters for this fight for the best results.
The limited event for this boss during the 1.6 update is called ‘Samurai Sighted… To Arms!’. The challenges in this event vary from defeating Maguu Kenki multiple times to not taking any damage from his phantoms. After taking a glance at the challenges, completing them is relatively easy if players are keeping them in mind. Using a character with a good shield-like Zhongli can make these challenges a walk in the park.
Maguu Kenki is set to disappear along with the archipelago at the end of the 1.6 update, however, it is unconfirmed whether he will be available to fight in Inazuma once the region is released. While the future of the boss isn’t confirmed, players should challenge him now to ensure they’re getting all the materials they can.
