The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke reveals how the new college spinoff series, Gen V, is partly inspired by Marvel's X-Men. First released in 2019 on Prime Video, The Boys has quickly become one of the streamer's most popular shows. Chronicling the exploits of a group of vigilantes who set out to take down corrupt superheroes, The Boys recently finished airing its third season. The most recent season earned positive reviews from both audiences and critics, with praise levied at the show's complex characters and moments of pure shock.

Recently officially given the title of Gen V, The Boys' spinoff began production back in May and is expected to follow a group of superheroes during their college days. Gen V acts as the series' second spinoff after The Boys Presents: Diabolical, an animated anthology series set within The Boys' universe. Gen V stars Patrick Schwarzenegger, Chance Perdomo, Jaz Sinclair, Lizzie Broadway, Shelley Con, and Maddie Phillips, among others, and is expected to release at some point during 2023. While most specific plot details remain unknown, Schwarzenegger has previously compared Gen V to HBO's Euphoria.

In a new interview with The Wrap, Kripke reveals that Gen V will be partly inspired by the G-Men in The Boys comics, a direct parody of Marvel's X-Men. He explains that, like in the case of the G-Men, part of the show will be centered on an "educational, college experience." In the same way that The Boys has since carved its own unique space in the superhero parody genre, Kripke promises that Gen V will use the G-Men as a "jumping-off point" before going off in its own unique direction. Check out Kripke's full comment below:

“I would say it’s loosely inspired by an element of the comics, which is the G-Men. Part of the G-Men is there’s sort of an educational, college experience. And we just used that as a jumping-off point, kind of similar to The Boys, where we sort of take an initial notion and then we are going to run with it in our own weird direction.”

The G-Men from The Boys

The Boys has made no secret of the characters and ideals it parodies, with Homelander (Antony Starr) a parody of Superman and The Deep a parody of Aquaman, something that Gen V seems to be continuing. In The Boys' comics, the G-Men serve as one of the three central superhero factions, alongside Payback and The Seven, both of which have now been introduced in The Boys. Although much remains unknown about the upcoming spinoff show, there are already a few connections to the X-Men that are apparent on the surface, most notable of which is the fact it takes place at a school, not unlike Charles Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters.

Like The Boys before it, Gen V seems to be setting up an array of new despicable characters, putting them in scenarios that will likely more accurately reflect what would happen if superheroes were real. While there were many disagreements and squabbles between students at Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters, The Boys' spinoff will likely take this to a whole other level, depicting what happens when a group of young and impressionable superpowered college students party and abuse their powers. It remains to be seen just how closely The Boys' spinoff, Gen V, pulls from the G-Men and the X-Men but, unfortunately, it looks like it'll be a while before fans get to see the show for themselves.
