Geeking Out: Kevin Smith's Talk Show Premieres With Comic-Con Special

With the rise in recent years of pop culture that is largely considered nerdy and/or geeky - like the massively successful superhero blockbusters and numerous television series based on comic books and graphic novels - there has also been an influx of media responding to that rising popularity. One trend on television has been the increase of talk shows geared toward specific subjects, such as The Walking Dead aftershow The Talking Dead, or more generalized series, like Kevin Smith's Comic Book Men. Soon joining their ranks is Smith's new late-night talk show, Geeking Out.

The show will find its home among fellow nerd-centric fare on AMC with hosts Smith and Greg Grunberg (Heroes, Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens) leading the 30-minute episodes discussing topics about which they are geeking out. Now, with Geeking Out set to kick off with a special episode focusing on Comic-Con International in San Diego, we know more of what that premiere will entail.

AMC has announced Geeking Out will premiere Sunday July 24th at 10pm ET on the network and will feature the hosts going "behind-the-scenes of the con that started it all." The episode will see Smith interview Jason Bourne star Matt Damon about the upcoming film, while later Grunberg will speak with Star Trek Beyond composer Michael Giacchino and hear a preview of the movie's score.

Additionally set to be featured in the Geeking Out premiere episode is "an all-access VIP pass through the convention" as well as interviews with comic book/graphic novel creators and artists and cosplayers attending SDCC. As for the following episodes of Geeking Out, the show is described as taking "a timely look at pop culture through a fanboy lens and features talk, celebrity interviews and out-of-the-studio segments." According to the initial report of AMC picking up Geeking Out, the show will start out by airing eight subsequent episodes in its Sunday night slot.

Of course, the SDCC special episode is likely the best way to introduce Geeking Out to its target audience, with those fans who weren't able to attend the convention able to get a look at the show floor and the goings on this year. Plus, considering Smith's annual presence at SDCC and his reputation within the fan community, he'll be able to give viewers of Geeking Out a particularly entertaining experience.

That said, considering the rise of geek-geared media - especially when we look beyond the realm of television to online content and podcasts - there is plenty for nerdy fans to wade through. So, it remains to be seen how Smith and Grunberg will carve out their own corner of the SDCC coverage with Geeking Out. At the very least, Geeking Out will provide another opportunity for fans to geek out about the topics they love so much.

Geeking Out will premiere with an SDCC-focused episode Sunday July 24th at 10pm ET on AMC.
