Gears 5 was announced at last year's E3 to much aplomb, but since then it's been mostly silence on developer The Coalition's front regarding the latest entry in the Gears of War franchise. However, as we come up on the one-year anniversary of the game's maiden announcement, it appears that there's a chance the Gears 5 release date has been inadvertently leaked and that the title will be arriving much sooner than we all think.

The Gears of War franchise has been busy, with Universal's movie currently in the works alongside a mobile title and Gears Tactics on the horizon, also announced at E3 2018. Gears 5 was noted as being the franchise's way of branching out at the Microsoft conference where it was announced; as one of Xbox's long-standing exclusives, it has a lot of shoes to fill this year considering the waves that Sony exclusives have made on the market so far.

It's now been reported that the Gears 5 release date has been essentially leaked by the Taiwanese game ratings board, which apparently put up an entry for the latest Gears of War a few days ago with a marked release date of 10 September 2019. While this date has since been removed, Xbox-focused site Generación Xbox has reported this same reported release date based on the ratings board's previously available information as well. Having ratings information about a title up is usually a decent indicator that it's on its way relatively soon, but there's not been a reported corroboration with ratings information in other regions yet to support an upcoming release date.

Gears of War 5

The one-year anniversary of Gears 5's initial announcement is imminent and it's probably a safe bet that there's going to be something shown off about the title at this year's E3. If not Gears 5, then news about the mobile spin-off could also be another candidate. September seems like a relatively quiet release period currently, so timing it during that particular window after 2019's busy start doesn't seem far-fetched if that does end up being when Gears 5 drops.

While there's not yet been any comment from The Coalition about whether or not this release date leak has any merit to it, we're not expecting any official word on this front until E3 2019. It makes sense for any important information about Gears 5 to rear its head then, and it would be great if the franchise could re-ignite the enthusiasm that fans had for it in the wake of its initial announcement.
