[UPDATE: According to Gary Oldman's manager, Douglas Urbanski, Gary Oldman is NOT in the film.]
Yesterday, news hit the web that two actors with the first name Gary could be in Iron Man 2: Garry Shandling and Gary Oldman. It's nice to have some positive casting news to balance out the negative - The negative being Terrence Howard's removal from the film and his feelings about it.
Shandling reportedly was on set Tuesday shooting a big scene (filming for Iron Man 2 began Monday) and according to IESB, he’s playing Senator Stern. His character apparently appears in a scene that helps bridge the two movies together.
[Minor Spoiler Alert]
In the final (pre-credits) scene of Iron Man, Tony Stark openly admits to the press that he is in fact the armored hero – The second film may begin from that very same scene (or at least flash back to) and that’s where Senator Stern may come in.
As for Gary Oldman’s role in the movie, it’s not so clear. Oldman has been spotted on set in Los Angeles but there’s no confirmation on who he’s playing. Rumor has it that he may be playing Howard Stark, father of Robert Downey Jr.’s character. That role was initially rumored to be filled by Tim Robbins but he debunked that rumor himself saying it was only an internet rumor.
I hope that turns out to be the case – I was one of the folks who wasn’t very supportive of that casting decision and I’d much prefer Oldman to take the role.
Gary Oldman is a phenomenal actor who’s been landing some major roles in recent years (Sirius Black in the Harry Potter franchise and Commissioner Gordon in Nolan’s Batman films to name a few).
He also wouldn’t be the first to cross the line between the major Comic book corporations. In recent years, we saw James Marsden go from the X-Men trilogy to Superman Returns and Halle Berry do the same with her lead role as Catwoman (awful awful movie).
The difference however, is that those particular Marvel films were under Fox Studios. If Oldman were to go from a Warner Brothers DC film (Warner Bros. owns DC Comics) to a Marvel Studios’ movie, that would be a first.
What do you think of these two veteran actors having roles in Iron Man 2?
Iron Man 2 opens May 7, 2010.
