Gary Oldman is the cynical head of a down-and-out section of MI5 in the first trailer for Apple TV+’s new drama/thriller series Slow Horses. The talented acting veteran has had a long and successful career spanning four decades on the big screen, including roles in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Fifth Element, Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy and the Harry Potter film franchise.

In his newest role, Oldman is set to lead the cast of Apple TV+’s upcoming series Slow Horses. The show, based on the award winning novel series by Mick Herron, follows a dumping ground department of MI5 called Slough House, where ineffective agents are sent following errors on the job. Slow Horses is produced by See-Saw films and has been adapted for television by Veep’s Will Smith. In addition to Oldman, the core cast includes Academy Award nominees Kristin Scott Thomas and Jonathan Pryce, as well as Jack Lowden and Olivia Cooke.

In a new trailer for Slow Horses from Apple TV, Oldman can be seen in action as Jackson Lamb, the dry but brilliant leader of the underdog MI5 group. The comedic but dramatic tone of the series is on full show with its combination of espionage thrills and witty dialogue. The trailer introduces the concept of Slough House and its reputation as a rock-bottom agency. However, when the team finally lands a potential case, they may have a chance to turn things around. Slow Horses is by no means Oldman's first brush with political drama/thriller projects. The Academy Award-winning actor landed his first Oscar for portraying British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in 2017’s Darkest Hour. His history with espionage thrillers also includes his acclaimed role in 2011’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, based on John le Carré iconic George Smiley novel series, in which Oldman played Smiley himself.

Apple's Slow Horses is set to be a highly-anticipated original series for the streaming platform. The six-part miniseries adapts the first book in Herron’s series, leaving room for several seasons further down the line if it proves successful. Oldman looks on top form as ever in his complex starring role as witty and cynical, but effective, leader. Long-time fans of Oldman's work will no doubt be delighted to see the talented actor return to the genre that served up some of his most iconic roles, and will see how Slow Horses stacks up against his impressive filmography when it releases on Friday, April 1.
