'Gangster Squad' Lands New Release Date, 'Gravity' Delayed to 2013

Jan 13 Box Office - Gangster Squad

The heads over at Warner Bros. have reshuffled release dates for two noteworthy upcoming titles: the star-studded period crime drama Gangster Squad - and the technologically-innovative, 3D sci-fi thriller Gravity.

Gangster Squad previously had (then briefly lost) an October 2012 release date; it's now set to hit theaters this year on September 7th. Gravity has been removed from the Thanksgiving 2012 holiday frame, for a (tentatively) unspecified date in 2013.

We here at Screen Rant have been keeping a close eye on Gangster Squad for the past year; the talent connected to this project alone was sufficient to land it a spot on our 20 Most Anticipated Movies of 2012 list. Thanks to the premiere of a shiny official trailer last week, Ruben Fleischer's third go in the director's seat (after Zombieland and 30: Minutes or Less) now ranks high on many film geeks' lists of most anticipated titles for the last third of 2012.

Gangster Squad arrives on the scene a week after Lawless, which is also a hotly-anticipated period crime flick based on real events, that also comes armed with a killer cast. Hopefully, that means the 2012 Summer Movie season will go out with a bang - and the Fall/Winter period can start off on the right foot, much like last year (see: the one-two punch of Contagion and Warrior).

Gravity's delay comes as somewhat of a surprise, especially in the aftermath of overwhelmingly positive feedback from film bloggers and journalists (some of the more casual moviegoers were less entranced) who attended a test screening earlier this month. Alfonso Cuarón’s film was originally scheduled to open this November - alongside the Red Dawn remake, the CGI toon Rise of the Guardians and Davis O. Russell dramedy The Silver Linings Playbook.

It's possible that Gravity's technical qualities (like a 17-minute single-take opening shot) require more touching up in post-production than expected - or perhaps Warner Bros. has decided the Sandra Bullock-anchored film is better fit for a spring/summer release. Either way, cinephiles will have to scratch that one off their must-see list (as far as 2012 is concerned, that is).

We will continue to keep you up-to-date on the status of both Gangster Squad and Gravity, in the future.
