New 'Game of Thrones' Trailer; Exclusive Preview on April 3rd

HBO Game of Thrones

It's been nearly two years since we first reported that Game of Thrones, the first book in George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire heptalogy (currently four of the seven books have been released), would be making a transition to the TV screen.

Now with only a few months left before the TV show airs, the Home Box Office has released another exciting trailer for the highly-anticipated medieval fantasy series.

HBO will debut the first of ten Game of Thrones episodes on April 17th - no doubt in time to allow new fans to get caught up on the novels - since the, long-awaited, fifth installment in the book series, A Dance With Dragons, is scheduled for release on July 12th.

If you're unfamiliar with the basic Song of Ice and Fire premise (and subsequently Game of Thrones), here's HBO's official blurb:

Summers span decades. Winters can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun. It will stretch from the south, where heat breeds plots, lusts, and intrigues; to the cast and savage eastern lands; all the way to the frozen north, where an 800-foot wall of ice protects the kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond. Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords, and honest men… all will play the ‘Game of Thrones.' Based on the popular book series “A Song of Ice and Fire,” by George R.R. Martin, the fantasy series 'Game of Thrones' chronicles an epic struggle for power set in a vast and violent fantasy kingdom. The ensemble cast includes Mark Addy, Sean Bean, Emilia Clarke, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Fairley, Lena Headey, Kit Harington and Aidan Gillen.

Unlike some of the earlier footage, the latest Game of Thrones trailer sports high-production values and presents the series as a genuine contender that could capture the interest of a much larger demographic - as opposed to simply fans of the books.

In addition to the trailer, George R.R. Martin fans, as well as TV enthusiasts in general, will be excited to hear that HBO has scheduled an exclusive Game of Thrones preview for April 3rd at 9:00 p.m. (ET/PT). The preview will run approximately 15 minutes (since part three of the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce will air at 9:15) - and gives viewers a sneak peek at the first episode of the highly-anticipated TV adaptation. That said, it's unclear whether the preview will be a mix of interviews and footage (like the last preview) or a full fifteen minutes from the first episode.

Don't fret too much if you've got other plans that night, while the preview is being advertised as a "one-time-only play," the preview will also be available on as well as HBO Go - and, starting on Monday, April 8th, available through HBO On Demand.
