Fans missing Game of Thrones can rest easy, as HBO today shared a likely release date for Targaryen prequel series House of the Dragon. The original series went off the air last May, with many fans disappointed by its final season and series finale. However, thanks to strong past seasons and a loyal fan base, many are still eager to revisit that world. In fact, another prequel series for Game of Thrones was also in development. That show, sometimes known as The Long Night or Bloodmoon, was passed on after the pilot was filmed.

Clearly, things are looking better for House of the Dragon. Set 300 years before Game of Thrones, the series will focus on House Targaryen and is based on George R.R. Martin's book Fire & Blood. The series will consist of 10 episodes, as was announced last October. As it's still in the early stages and hasn't begun filming yet, no cast has been announced.

Per VarietyHouse of the Dragon is on track for a 2022 release. HBO programming chief Casey Bloys spoke about the series at the Television Critics Association tour today. He explained, “They [the writers] are in the room breaking story right now. My guess is we’ll see it on the air in ’22.” Bloys previously spoke out against the idea of a sequel rather than a prequel to Game of Thrones, saying "I don't want to take characters from this world...and put them off into another world with someone else creating it." He elaborated, "Right now, a sequel or picking up any of the other characters doesn't make sense for us."

Of course, one of the most famous Targaryens is the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys, though the timing of the series, as well as Bloys' comments, makes in unlikely she'll appear. For his part, Kit Harington (Jon Snow) has said outright that he doesn't plan on returning for any Game of Thrones spinoffs. Appropriately, though, dragons themselves are confirmed to make an appearance in House of the Dragon. The series is a part of HBO's plan to capitalize on the success of Game of Thrones while also satisfying fans of the original novels.

With a potential release date so far off, it's possible that things will change before 2022. HBO's schedule could necessitate an earlier release for House of the Dragon. On the flip side, writing and filming the series could prove more daunting than expected, forcing the series to be pushed back. However, if the 2022 release date does indeed come to fruition, it should give fans more than enough time to miss the world of Game of Thrones and want to revisit it.
