Legendary horror author Stephen King defends the Daenerys Targaryen twist in the latest episode of Game of Thrones. The critically-acclaimed HBO series is currently at the end of its final season, with only one episode remaining. There was a lot of anticipation for the return of Game of Thrones, but the wait hasn't paid off for everybody.

Episode 5 of season 8 titled "The Bells" was released last Sunday and has earned Game of Thrones its lowest Rotten Tomatoes score, while managing to get a ton of complaints from fans. The episode saw Daenerys and Jon storm King's Landing in an attempt to dethrone Cersei Lannister. The episode had a lot of complaints from fans such as the inconsistencies with Drogon's powers, Jamie's character arc, and Varys' death, but there were two main problems that people really had an issue with. One was that Cersei's death seemed very unsatisfying to many people, and the other was that Daenerys suddenly seemed to turn into the Mad Queen. The Game of Thrones showrunners have tried to defend their decision, but now King has also spoken out about the twist.

Posting his opinion on Twitter, King explained that he has thoroughly enjoyed season 8 of Game of Thrones thus far, as well as the last episode's twist with Dani. King also said the negativity the final season has been facing is likely just because people don't really want the show to end. King's full tweet can be read below.

While the last episode of Game of Thrones saw a lot of backlash, it was hardly the first episode this season to receive criticism. The third episode of the season titled "The Long Night" saw the big battle of the living vs the dead, which was supposed to be one of the biggest battles of the entire series. The entire episode was a giant battle, but fans complained that the episode was too dark and felt that the Night King's death was anti-climactic. The following episode "The Last of the Starks" also received a lot of backlash and was the lowest rated episode of the series, before being overtaken by "The Bells".

Everybody has their own opinion about the show's final season, but fans have still made a lot of valid arguments about the current direction the show is heading. As far as the twist with Dany goes, there has always been evidence of her turning into the Mad Queen, but with only 6 episodes in the final season, it is understandable why fans might be irked by the sudden twist. Game of Thrones has never been a show known for giving characters happy endings, but hopefully the series finale will end on a high note rather than continuing to roll downhill.
