Fans of HBO’s popular series Game of Thrones began speculation about the show’s fifth season as soon as the fourth season finale, ‘The Children,' aired. The episode’s director, Alex Graves, said he never planned for the fan-favorite character of Lady Stoneheart to appear in the finale, but fans have since wondered if she will appear in season 5.

Now, filming is underway on the fifth season of Game of Thrones. Set photos from the show’s filming location in Croatia teased one storyline from the upcoming season. More recently, in an interview, Kristian Nairn (who plays Hodor) said he would be sitting out of season 5. It was assumed that Isaac Hempstead-Wright (Bran Stark) and Ellie Kendrick (Meera Reed) would also be absent from the upcoming season, but that may not be the case.

In an interview with ODE for his upcoming film, The Boxtrolls, Hempstead-Wright talked about his next project. Currently, his only plans are for “the next season of Game of Thrones,” though the young actor did say that school is his biggest project at the moment.

Although Bran and Hodor’s storyline in Game of Thrones has nearly caught up to the end of the fifth (and most recently released) book in George R. R. Martin’s series, there are certain plot points left for Hempstead-Wright’s character that may come into play in season 5.

In the season 4 finale, Bran, Hodor, and Meera arrive at the Weirwood tree beyond The Wall and meet the Three-Eyed Crow, also called the Last Greenseer in the books. In the fifth book, A Dance With Dragons, he helps Bran to train his ability of greensight (clairvoyance). Bran uses his skill to tap into memories of his father and communicate with a certain character in Westeros.

Since Nairn has stated he will not be returning for season 5, it’s possible that Bran’s scenes will revolve around his training with the Three-Eyed Crow. However, it’s also possible that since Hempstead-Wright didn’t specify that he’ll return for season 5, he may simply mean it’s his only acting commitment at the moment.

If Hempstead-Wright does appear in season 5 of Game of Thrones, fans may be able to learn more about Bran’s greensight abilities that have been a throughline of the series since season 1. We might have to wait until season 5 premieres to know for sure.

Game of Thrones season 5 will air in Spring 2015.
