The world of Game of Thrones is a dangerous place, to say the least. You can just look at the long list of dead characters to see how true that is. Given the medieval nature of the world, most of the violence is dealt through weapons like swords and axes. However, there’s a lot more going on in this world and sometimes the classic weapons just aren’t enough.

We’ve seen some creative weaponry in the show, but George R.R. Martin’s books feature even more objects of destruction and war. Through clever craftsmanship, ancestral heirlooms or something otherworldly, these are the weapons created to defeat just about any enemy. Hopefully, we’ll see them in the show someday.

10. Three-Pronged Spear

Meera Reed in Game of Thrones

The crannogmen – founders of House Reed who live in Riverland swamps – are generally looked down on in Westeros. Their small stature makes them something of a joke, but they’ve proven to be strong tacticians in battle. Their swampy lands are ideal for guerrilla combat and they are effective with their weapon of choice, the three-pronged spear.

Usually used for hunting, the crannogmen are also very accurate and deadly with the weapon in war. Its design allows it to inflict considerable damage. Meera Reed is seen wielding a traditional spear in the show, so that’s likely the closest we’ll get.

9. Mechanical Dragons

Cersei Lannister standing next to the skull of Balerion the Black Dread.

Clearly, the most useful thing to have in battle is a dragon. We’ve seen many times how one-sided they can make a battle and the Targaryens once used them to conquer Westeros. However, there was a time when the dragons died off and the Targaryens were forced to find another form of warfare.

To replace their conquering creatures, they built mechanical dragons which were meant to replicate the power of the real thing. Made of wood and iron, and filled with wildfire, they had potential but proved a disaster to use. Nothing beats the original.

8. Morningstar

The Kingsguard in Game of Thrones

Westerosi knights in the show are seen using swords in battle. However, in the books, knights tend to be more creative and some adopt their own unique weapons. One such knight is Balon Swann, a member of the Kingsguard under Joffrey, who carries a morningstar.

A real-world medieval weapon, a morningstar consists of a long handle shaft with a spiked ball on the end. It’s a close combat weapon, but easy to wield. Swann does a lot of damage using it during the Battle of Blackwater. Swann’s name has been mentioned in the show but he’s yet to make an explicit appearance.

7. The Longaxe

Areo Hotah in Game of Thrones

In the show, Areo Hotah is a fairly forgettable character, seen briefly as Prince Doran Martell's bodyguard. However, in the books, Hotah is one of the most formidable warriors in Westeros. He is also very powerful, as evidenced by how he wields his massive longaxe.

A weapon that would be a liability for most warriors, because is made to seem effortless by how Hotah swings it. The size of the weapon gives him immense reach on any enemy. Hotah is seen with some long weapon that could be meant to be the longaxe, but we never see him use it before he is killed off.

6. Tyrion’s Chain

Game of Thrones "Blackwater"

During the Battle of Blackwater, Tyrion Lannister proves to be a brilliant strategist and lends a big hand in the victory. The show depicts his most damaging weapon in the battle with the wildfire. However, in the books, Tyrion had even more up his sleeve.

After setting Blackwater Bay on fire and torching half of Stannis Baratheon’s fleet, Tyrion raises a massive chain across the bay’s opening. This prevents any more of Stannis’ ships from entering while also preventing the burning ships from escaping. It’s massively devastating and would have been cool to see on the show.

5. Widow's Blood

Joffrey bleeding from his nose and eyes in Game of Thrones

Even with all the war in Game of Thrones, poison has still been a popular method of killing. We’ve seen such characters as Joffrey Baratheon, Gregor Clegane and Olenna Tyrell dispatched with poison. We’ve also learned some of the commonly used poisons like The Strangler and Tears of Lys. But we’ve yet to see maybe the most intense poison used.

Called Widow’s blood, it shuts down a person’s bowels and bladder causing their own waste to slowly poison them. It would be a pretty disgusting way to go but there are a few characters who definitely deserve a death like this.

4. Valyrian Steel Armor

Euron-Greyjoy-in-Game-of-Thrones

Valyrian steel is one of the rarest substances in this world, with only a few known objects existing. Since it appears to be one of the few things that can kill White Walkers, it’s also the most valuable substance around. We’ve seen Valyrian steel swords and daggers, but one character pulled off something more impressive.

In one of the released chapters from the upcoming Winds of Winter book, Euron Greyjoy is seen with Valyrian steel armor. It is rumored that the armor can withstand dragon’s fire and even repeal other magic. That could be helpful in the wars to come.

3. Horn Of Winter

There are many items of legend in this universe that are said to come from magic. One of the most intriguing items of this sort is the so-called Horn of Winter, a horn that is thought is able to bring down the Wall. Mance Rayder claims to have it but it appears to be a fake.

We may have seen the horn in the show as there is a horn included among the stash of dragonglass Sam find North of the Wall. But since the Wall is down, it seems unlikely the show will find any use for it now.

2. Dragonbinder

Dragon Horn

In the books, Euron Greyjoy is very interested in magic. His travels to the east have allowed him to find some interesting artifacts. One such item he comes back with is a horn known as Dragonbinder. As the name suggests, it is said the horn can give you control of dragons.

The horn has yet to been used on an actual dragon in the books, but the one time it was blown, it caused the man who blew it great pain, so it may have some magic to it. It may not be real, but if it is, it would be a gamechanger.

1. Dawn

Swords

Some of the Valyrian steel swords we’ve seen revealed on the show include Longclaw and Oathkeeper, carried by Jon and Brienne respectively. However, one of the most famous Valyrian steel swords has yet to be mentioned.

Ser Arthur Dayne, maybe the greatest swordsman Westeros has ever seen, had a Valyrian steel sword called Dawn. After he was killed, the sword was lost. Dayne is seen in the show, but wields two swords and Dawn is never mentioned. There are rumors that Dawn is actually Lightbringer, the sword wielded by Azor Ahai.

Despite its legacy, it seems unlikely we’ll see it in the series.
