Official Game of Thrones Tabletop Game Coming For Final Season

The world of Game of Thrones can soon be experienced in the comfort of your living room, as an official tabletop game based on the series called Game of Thrones: Oathbreaker will be released alongside the final season of the show.

The A Song of Ice and Fire book series has been adapted into several games in the past, including the A Game of Thrones board game produced by Fantasy Flight and the A Song of Ice and Fire Roleplaying tabletop RPG produced by Green Ronin Publishing. There is also a Risk: Game of Thrones strategy game that was made in collaboration with the show. The fantasy realms of Essos and Westeros lend themselves well to games, which is also why there have been several video games based on Game of Thrones released in the past, including one produced by Telltale Games.

Game of Thrones: Oathbreaker is an upcoming tabletop game made by Dire Wolf Digital in collaboration with HBO that is based on the TV show instead of the books. Oathbreaker is a game that requires five to eight players, who will each take on the role of a significant political figure in Westeros. One of the Oathbreaker players will take on the role of the King or Queen, while the remaining players are members of noble families who either want to protect the realm or wish to steal the Iron Throne for themselves.

Dire Wolf Digital is best-known for developing Pokémon TCG Online, which is a version of the Pokémon Trading Card Game that can be played on computers and smartphones. The developers at Dire Wolf Digital are passionate about working on a Game of Thrones project. Scott Martins, President of Dire Wolf Digital said:

“We’re longtime fans of everything Game of Thrones, and we jumped at the chance to work with HBO to translate the tension and intrigue of one of the best shows in the world to a game that fans of every level of gaming experience can enjoy. Betrayal’s never been so much fun.”

Game of Thrones: Oathbreaker is a game that is as much about social interaction as it is about the cards or pieces that are dealt to the player, as the King or Queen has to determine who is truly loyal to them and who is simply faking fealty in order to push their own agenda, in a manner that sounds similar to the popular Mafia/Werewolf party game.

Game of Thrones isn't the only popular TV show to receive its own board game over the past few years, as The Walking Dead has a board game that was funded on Kickstarter. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has also had several board games based on the various films in the franchise, as well as one where the players have to take on Thanos during the events of Avengers: Infinity War
