The first pieces of concept art for the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon reveal peeks at the new dragons. The fantasy world from George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire book series first came to the small screen with HBO's Game of Thrones in 2011. Over the years, Game of Thrones cemented itself as one of the biggest shows in the world, and when it ended last year, HBO pursued various spin-off ideas. Though several were considered, only one is currently moving forward: House of the Dragon.

Set hundreds of years before Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon is based specifically on Martin's novel Fire & Blood, which told the history of House Targaryen. Casting took place over the summer with an eye on a 2022 premiere, and in October, Paddy Considine was cast in the lead role of King Viserys Targaryen. Beyond that, little else is known about House of the Dragon, but on Thursday, an exciting announcement emerged on social media.

The first official pieces of concept art for House of the Dragon were shared to the Game of Thrones social media account, along with the news that filming will begin next year. Both excitingly and unsurprisingly, the two images are of dragons. The first offers a peek at the full length of a dragon, while the second gets closer to its fearsome face. Check out both down below.

While Game of Thrones only boasted three dragons, all of which belonged to Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), House of the Dragon has the opportunity to showcase more of these mystical creatures. As is clear from the title of the show, House Targaryen is known for their connections to dragons, and, budget-willing, there will be several on display. The above concept art is a promising start, though they do share some similarities with Dany's children. Perhaps House of the Dragon will show some of their ancestors?

Game of Thrones earned raves for its special effects and awe-inspiring visuals, and hopefully House of the Dragon can keep those accolades coming. Miguel Sapochnik, who directed several standout Game of Thrones episodes, is on board as showrunner this time around along with Ryan Condal, who co-created the show with Martin. Sapochnik's involvement certainly bodes well for House of the Dragon, which has the potential to be a truly fascinating look at one of Westeros' most eccentric families. It'll be thrilling to see these dragons fly, even if we have to wait a while longer for that moment.
