Emilia Clarke and Jason Momoa have a mini Game of Thrones reunion. The pair starred together during season 1 of the hit HBO series as Daenerys Targaryen and Khal Drogo. Though their marriage was initially arranged by her brother Viserys for political purposes, Daenerys eventually goes from being terrified of the Dothraki warlord to falling in love with him. However, many view their relationship as a classic case of Stockholm syndrome. Towards the end of the first season, Khal Drogo succumbs to severe infection, and a witch, Mirri Maz Duur, performs a blood ritual to save his life, but he ends up in a catatonic state. In the act of mercy killing, Dany smothers her "sun and stars" with a pillow.

Momoa's first role was as a lifeguard on the 1990s series Baywatch, but he first gained prominence for his performance as Khal Drogo on the first season of HBO's fantasy series. After an unsuccessful attempt at rebooting Conan the Barbarian, Momoa went on to land a role as the DCEU's Aquaman, making appearances as Arthur Curry in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League before starring in his solo film in 2018. On the other hand, Clarke has also starred in some franchise films, Terminator Genisys and Solo: A Star Wars Story, but her post-Game of Thrones career began more recently in 2019. Since then, one of the most anticipated performances she has lined up is in Marvel's Secret Invasion.

Though its final season disappointed many viewers, Game of Thrones still ranks among the most popular and most critically acclaimed series. There is certainly plenty of interest in reunions like these. However, this one seems to come a little earlier than expected, considering the final episode aired just two years ago. Khaleesi and Khal were last seen together during the season 2 finale as she has a vision during her visit to the House of the Undying.

There are currently many Game of Thrones spinoffs in development at HBO, but given they are all prequels, Clarke's Khaleesi and Momoa's Khal won't be a part of them. While these shows are set to expand the fantasy world with more stories set in Westeros, this reunion photo is a welcome look back at Game of Thrones' early heydays, the show that went on to spark a cultural phenomenon.
