Game of Thrones created a major plot hole with Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and the Warlocks of Qarth. The Warlocks were heavily involved with Daenerys' storyline in season 2 and there were reasons to believe the group would remain a threat down the line. That was not the case, however, because the Warlocks of Qarth disappeared from the HBO series after a brief appearance in the season 3 premiere episode.

The Warlocks in Game of Thrones were practitioners of magic located in a trading city on the southern coast of Essos. The group was known for converging in the House of the Undying in Qarth, and could be recognized by their long robes and blue lips caused by ingesting "shades of the evening." Fellow Qartheens didn't view Warlocks as elite but they were still allowed sit among the council of Qarth, known as the Thirteen. The Warlock who served on the council and was the prominent member of the Warlocks was Pyat Pree.

Pyat Pree was in attendance with the Thirteen when Daenerys arrived at Qarth in Game of Thrones season 2. Unbeknownst to Daenyers, the Warlocks magic had grown since the hatching of her three dragons. Pyat Pree tried to enamor Daenerys with the intention of stealing the dragons. He formed an alliance with Xaro Xhoan Daxos, a merchant prince in Qarth and successfully took the dragons before killing the rest of the Thirteen. Since the dragons affect the Warlocks' power and the creatures are stronger in Daenerys' presence, Pyat Pree kidnapped her as well. He wanted her to fuel their magic for eternity, but Daenerys thwarted that plan by using her dragons to kill Pyat Pree to escape. She safely got away from Qarth with the three dragons, leaving the Warlocks wanting revenge.

The Warlocks Of Qarth Were Never Addressed After Game Of Thrones Season 3

In the Game of Thrones season 3 premiere, Daenerys found herself in the Red City. Weeks had passed since the Qarth debacle, but the Warlocks didn't forget about Daenerys and her dragons. While at the city, a young Warlock girl tried to assassinate Daenerys before Ser Barristan Selmy prevented the attack. The girl disappeared after revealing herself, which was meant to prove that the Warlocks were still a threat. Despite this revelation heading into a new season, the Warlocks were never seen or worried about again. With that, Game of Thrones developed a major plot hole.

By adding the assassination attempt on Daenerys, the series seemed to have further plans for the Warlocks that were later abandoned. It was odd that the scene made the final cut but the series never addressed the Warlocks in the future. It's possible that Game of Thrones intended to bring back the Warlocks to fix the plot hole, but ran out of time seeing as they weren't necessary to Daenerys' arc. She had enough enemies throughout the series and by bringing back the Warlocks, the conflict would have felt convoluted. It's always possible that the Warlocks of Qarth have an expanded role in the remaining installments within George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire.
