Maester Luwin made his debut in the pilot episode of Game of Thrones and survived two seasons. He is perhaps best remembered for teaching and aiding a young Bran when both his father, mother and elder brother left his as the highest-ranking Stark at Winterfell and the War of the Five Kings began. Maester Luwin was portrayed by Donald Sumpter and, it's quite possible he looked somewhat familiar to many Thrones viewers.

Acting regularly since 1966 he's made his mark on television and in film. Like fellow Game of Thrones star, Iain Glen, he appeared in the film version of Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead as Claudius, Hamlet's King and Uncle. Masterpiece Theater on PBS and the BBC presented its own mini-series based on the Victor Hugo novelLes Misérables, in 2018. This was no adaptation of the musical.

Sumpter appeared as Monsieur Mabeuf, who works at a Paris church, and plays a key role in both Valjean and Marius's storylines. Sumpter appeared in three of the mini series's six episodes. The series was very well reviewed and for sticking very closely to its original source material.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo -  7.8

The 2011 adaptation of the Stieg Larsson international bestseller, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, starred Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist, and Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander.

Sumpter portrayed Detective Morell, a retired Superintendent who is helping to investigate the disappearance around which the action of the story takes place. The film made over $200 million at the box office and was nominated for two Golden Globes and five Academy Awards.

Merlin - 7.9

Merlin was a British television drama that aired between 2008 and 2012, it followed the early adventures of Merlin when he was no more than a servant to a very young Prince Arthur in Camelot.

The series saw Merlin and Arthur move from rivals to best friends and highlighted Merlin as the real influence on Arthur's success. Sumpter appeared in one episode in 2010, "The Eye of the Phoenix". He took on the role of the legendary Fisher King, an ancient wizard, who Arthur must find to help prove his right to the throne, though of course, the journey is really Merlin's to take.

Wallander - 7.9

Wallander is a TV show that followed a Swedish cop played by Kenneth Branagh for four seasons. Sumpter made his appearance in season three, in an episode titled "An Event in Autumn".

Sumpter took on the role of Fredrik Thorson, a neighbor to Wallander and his girl-friend, who is able to offer up information on their home's previous occupants when a skeleton is found in Wallander's own backyard. Fredrik's own farm ends up laying a large role in the episode as well.

Spooks - 8.2

Spooks

Donald Sumpter made his appearance on the long-running British show Spooks in 2010 (the show's ninth season). The program follows the United Kingdom's domestic intelligence organization, MI-5. Sumpter took on the part of Stephen Kirby, in the third episode of season nine back in 2010.

Kirby is a chemistry professor who knows the location of a deadly biological agent. The episode gets more complicated when Kirby's own daughter, who may also know the whereabouts of the biological weapon, is tortured for information.

The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher - 8.4

The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher was a BBC series that aired from 2011 to 2014. The program followed detective Jonathan Whicher as he investigated a child murder in the 1860s.

Sumpter took part in the show in 2011, as Peter Edlin QC. Known as The suspicions of Mr. Whicher: The Murder at Road Hill House, aired over four episodes and was the first of three short seasons to make it to television.

Doctor Who - 8.6

While many of the Game of Thrones cast has made an appearance on Doctor Who, Sumpter appeared before most. He made his debut as Enrico Casali / Commander Ridgeway back in 1968 before coming back in 1972.

In 1968 he appeared in five parts of the "Wheel in Space" serial in the fifth season of Doctor Who. The serial is remembered in part because much of it is missing from the BBC archives. In 1972 Sumpter returned as Commander Ridgeway in parts three, four, and five of "the Sea Devils" when the Doctor is held prisoner.

Black Mirror - 8.8

Black Mirror, the Netflix original, began in 2011, and Sumpter made his mark in that first season and the very first episode. Sumpter played the part of Julian Hereford in the episode titled "The National Anthem".

The episode follows Prime Minister Michael Callow as he is forced to contend with the issues surrounding Princess Susannah, a well-liked member of the Royal Family, who is kidnapped. The episode got quite an audience hooked for the rest of the series that ran all the way through 2019.

Peaky Blinders - 8.8

For thirty episodes over five seasons, Peaky Blinders followed the Peaky Blinders gang in Birmingham, England, and their doings following the end of World War I.

Cillian Murphy stars as the gang's boss, Tommy Shelby. Sumpter appeared in two episodes in 2017, the fourth season, as Arthur Bigg, the King's Private Secretary. Season four of the show was nominated for six BAFTA Awards, including Best Drama Series.

Chernobyl - 9.4

Chernobyl, the HBO miniseries about the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, aired in 2019 and was nominated for four Golden Globes and six Prime Time Emmys (it won Best Limited Series at both).

Sumpter played Zharkov, a Pripyat executive committee member (Pripyat being the city that was founded for workers at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, and abandoned after the disaster). Sumpter appeared in two of the series's five episodes.
