The penultimate episode of Game of Thrones was always going to have fans feeling a lot of feelings. Undoubtedly, the show wasn’t always going to deliver an ending season that made everyone happy. But many fans were expecting the series to pay off all that it had been building up in a more satisfying way and were shocked to find the ending of the series heading in some unexpected directions. While there is still one episode left, many fans were upset about a lot of what happened in “The Bells” and left feeling confused or disappointed.
Here are 10 things that had fans the most upset and confused in the penultimate episode of Game of Thrones.
10 JAIME’S SUDDEN TURN
Jaime has at times been one of the most fascinating characters on the show. He is definitely a man who has committed many crimes, but he has had a redemption arc that was nuanced and compelling. Many fans were shocked that he would throw away the relationship filled with respect that he had built with Brienne over the seasons to run back into Cersei’s arms.
Fans had speculated that Jamie might be instrumental in defeating Cersei, but instead, his character development over the seasons seemed to fly out the window. He seemed to not care at all about the innocent people, even though saving people was a driving force in his decision to kill the Mad King all those years ago.
9 THE FIGHT BETWEEN EURON AND JAIME
While this might have been more of a minor moment, many fans felt this was a strange duel to include in this episode. Euron is not a likable character and having a fight that seemed more centered around who Cersei loved best was a weird choice.
Clearly, Euron was a one-off lover that Cersei needed in order to get an army. The duel seemed cheap and didn’t even pay off any character moments that had been built up for Jaime and Cersei over the years. Many fans felt this fight was just a measuring contest.
8 GREY WORM AND THE UNSULLIED GOING ALONG WITH DAENERYS
Many fans have rightfully called out Game of Thrones for having problems with representation and killing off many of its characters who were people of color, including Missandei last episode. So, while it’s understandable that Grey Worm would be heartbroken over her death, it seemed strange that he would so willingly support Daenerys and her choice to attack innocent people even after the surrender had been called. Grey Worm is loyal, but many fans were hoping he would get a more heroic moment than this.
7 ARYA SEEMING LESS CAPABLE THAN IN OTHER EPISODES
Luckily, Arya is still alive which means her story isn’t over and she might be instrumental once again. While her choice to forego revenge in order to save her own life can be viewed as a smart one and interesting for the character, Arya did seem to almost take a step backward in character development. She seemed less capable and pulled together in this episode, almost childlike compared to the Arya who killed the Night King earlier this season.
6 THAT VARYS SUDDENLY FORGOT HOW TO KEEP SECRETS
Varys is the Master of Whispers. Throughout the series, he has been an expert spy, manipulator, and informant. Throughout all of the different tyrants and this entire game, he has stayed alive. Fans thought his ending seemed poorly delivered. He seemed suddenly like he had no experience keeping secrets and would have been able to keep himself from being found out. Overall, it was a disappointing end to the character that seemed to ignore all of his skills.
5 TYRION’S CHARACTERIZATION
Tyrion has always been a fan-favorite character, but many viewers have pointed out that he is less compelling in this season. His characteristic wit and intellect seem less important now than ever before, but he's making multiple mistakes, misjudgments, and struggling to advise Daenerys effectively.
Tyrion has become less clever and too trusting. He’s not the smartest person in the room anymore, and many fans feel that he has been underutilized and written poorly.
4 JON BEING BASICALLY USELESS AGAIN
While Jon Snow might have been set up as a sort of Chosen One archetype in the story, he has been basically useless this entire season. Arya was the one who killed the Night King, and in all the battles so far Jon has basically done nothing. He refused to listen to Daenerys when she begged him to keep her secret but yet wouldn’t take any stand against her and her plan to attack King’s Landing either. His reticence to be a leader and his uselessness in battle has made fans wonder what the point of him has been all along.
3 THE INCONSISTENCY OF DRAGON POWERS
One thing that fans love to make fun of about the show is how underutilized the dragons have been. It seems that their powers have rarely been that helpful, and they have been much easier to kill than you would think.
After Daenerys lost Rhaegal, many fans wondered why she and her armies weren’t better at strategizing. Then, in “The Bells,” we see Drogon unleash destructive power that is so much more than the dragons have ever shown before, even though he is the only one left.
2 CERSEI’S DEATH
As far as viewers can tell, Cersei met her end in last night’s episode. This is hard for many fans to believe as we don’t see a body or have the death particularly confirmed at this point, although it seems hard to believe she would have made it out of all that crushing rock alive. Considering that Cersei has been a main character and powerful villain for so many seasons, this death felt very unsatisfying and like it didn’t do the character justice.
1 DAENERYS’ SUDDEN DESCENT INTO BEING THE MAD QUEEN
If there’s one thing from the episode that people can’t stop talking about, it’s Daenerys. While the possibility of her becoming the Mad Queen has always been there and even hinted at, many fans feel the execution of this story was done poorly. Her decision to torch so many innocent people and destroy King’s Landing even after the surrender seemed to happen too quickly. While there's no denying that Daenerys has shown she can be ruthless, she has also at many points been compassionate. Many fans felt this abrupt switch was out of character.
