Game of Thrones: The Musical Coming to Comic-Con

Game of Thrones: The Musical Parody is set to perform at San Diego Comic-Con this year. Game of Thrones is set to return for its long-awaited seventh season in mid-July, more than a year after its last new episode aired. The upcoming new season has the Game of Thrones fandom counting down the days, due in part to the promise that we’ll finally get Khaleesi’s arrival in Westeros, as well as a huge step towards the series’ ultimate endgame.

While the annual Comic-Con International in San Diego actually begins four days after the season premiere, Game of Thrones-related programming is expected to have quite a presence at this year’s event. The official schedule has not yet been announced, although Game of Thrones has had a panel at SDCC every year since the show premiered, usually following a completed season, so another is a good bet. Meanwhile, there’s going to be another, totally unauthorized Game of Thrones show in San Diego next month.

Game of Thrones: The Musical Parody is coming to San Diego during Comic-Con for eight shows between July 20 and 23. The shows will run at the 10th Avenue Arts Center in San Diego’s Gas Lamp District, Thursday-Saturday at 6 and 9 p.m. during Comic-Con week, plus a Friday midnight show and a Sunday show at 1 p.m.

Described as “A Song of Nice Satire,” the — completely unauthorized by HBO — musical debuted in West Hollywood earlier this year, and features such numbers as “The Story of a Game of Thrones,” “Be My Hand,” “All Men Must Die,” “Dothraki Love Song” and “Heads Will Roll.” A soundtrack album is available as well. According to a review published by Film School Rejects of the West Hollywood production, the plot covers the first season of the show and features a George R.R. Martin character as the narrator.

Bringing the event to Comic-Con — even if it’s not, it appears, an officially sanctioned Comic-Con event —  seems like a good idea for this production, as it’s hard to imagine a larger confluence of Game of Thrones fans in one place as San Diego during Comic-Con weekend.

It's unclear what HBO, the Game of Thrones producers or George R.R. Martin think about this parody of their work. The musical is also not to be confused with a different Game of Thrones: The Musical, a 12-minute sketch performed by Coldplay and several cast members for the Red Nose Day fundraiser in 2015.

San Diego Comic-Con 2017 runs from July 20 to 23 at the San Diego Convention Center. Game of Thrones returns July 16 on HBO and its streaming platforms.
