Slowly but surely the time to journey back to Westeros is approaching and HBO is enticing weary fans with a glimpse of Game of Thrones season 3 via a brand new teaser trailer.
The trailer doesn’t give much away or show any new forthcoming characters, but it is eerie and somewhat foreboding, focusing on the creepy three-eyed Raven flying over modern real-world cities, with the tagline "Their world returns to ours."
For those who might have forgotten, the three-eyed raven first appeared to young Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) in his dreams, after he was placed in a coma from being pushed out of a castle tower. After that, Ol’ Three-Eyes was seen various times aiding Bran via his subconscious - including the last time, when the tricloptic bird led him to the Stark family crypt right before the death of this father, Eddard (Sean Bean).
In the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ book series on which Game of Thrones is based on, three-eyed crow (rather than a raven) is famous for (among other things) telling Bran to fly by screeching the words "fly or die!".
In another nod to the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ source material, the trailer also features a grim baritone singing of ‘The Rains of Castamere’ – a song written about Lord Tywin Lannister's crushing victory of the rebellious House Reyne of Castamere. The song was also included in the TV series in a scene from season 1, episode 9, in which Bronn (Jerome Flynn) drinks and sings with his men outside the Red Keep.
The third season will be based on the third book in George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, ‘A Storm of Swords’ and will introduce a long list of new characters, including Diana Rigg as Olenna (Redwyne) Tyrell, the "Queen of Thorns" and Ciarán Hinds as Mance Rayder, the famed Wildling "King-Beyond-The-Wall".
Game of Thrones returns to HBO Sunday March 31 @ 9pm.
