A new Game of Thrones prequel show based on a series of George R.R. Martin novellas is officially confirmed to be coming to HBO. After hitting HBO back in 2011, Game of Thrones became one of the network's most popular offerings and a spinoff, House of the Dragon was released last year. House of the Dragon was only one of a number of announced spinoffs, however, and many have since been lying dormant.

Now, Warner Bros. has announced another Game of Thrones prequel is officially on the way in the form of an adaptation of Martin's Tales of Dunk & Egg novellas.

The new spinoff, currently titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, will see Martin serving as a writer and executive producer alongside Ira Parker. Ryan Condal and Vince Gerardis will also executive produce. Check out the official synopsis for the show below:

“A century before the events of ‘Game of Thrones,’ two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”

Dunk & Egg Are A Great Choice For The Next Game Of Thrones Spinoff

House of the Dragon earned positive reviews and has been also been a strong performer in terms of viewership, making another Game of Thrones spinoff inevitable. Of course, it was announced at the beginning of the month that an additional spinoff focusing on Aegon's Conquest is also moving forward, but the Tales of Dunk & Egg novellas are arguably a better option for the franchise.

Both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon deal with grand stories, focusing on royal families, sprawling battles, shifting political allegiances, and vast territories changing hands. While Game of Thrones did this well for a number of seasons and House of the Dragon season 1 has found a similar level of success, another epic and large-scale show in the franchise could feel like overkill.

By contrast, the Tales of Dunk & Egg novellas tell much smaller stories, focusing on the two titular characters. This more intimate approach to the Game of Thrones universe will allow A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight to explore Westeros in an all-new way, digging more into two central figures instead of following a dozen or more. While many details are still to come regarding the latest Game of Thrones spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is already shaping up to be an interesting addition to the growing franchise.
