Fans are excited to see not just the political intrigue in House Of The Dragon that Game of Thrones delivered to fans but also some awesome action. It is unlikely the show will produce something as epic as the Battle of Winterfell, but even without that scale, the show could still kill off more than seven main/side characters, which is how many die in "The Long Night."

A few of these deaths were majorly emotional and truly affecting for fans, executed brilliantly in that regard, and others were anti-climactic. Most of them, though, had some sort of impact on Game Of Thrones and the future of Westeros.

Melisandre

Melisandre removes her enchanted necklace and dies after the Battle of Winterfell in Game Of Thrones

It was hard to feel sympathy for Melisandre upon her death. Her role in the heartbreaking death of Shireen alone took her past being able to be redeemed in the eyes of many, never mind everything else she does. Nevertheless, she played her role in the Battle of Winterfell and accepted death when her time finally came.

Her death technically came after the Battle of Winterfell had finished, though, and so was not actually that impactful on what would go on to happen in the episode. Nor did her death have massive implications for the rest of the series other than leaving one less ally for Jon/Daenerys in the final episodes. Her life was more impactful than her death by a good margin.

Eddison Tollett 'Edd'

Dolorous Edd killed during the Battle of Winterfell in Game of Thrones

Edd was an early casualty during the Battle of Winterfell, falling at a Wight's hands during the battle's initial phase after the undead army took out the Dothraki. It is a fairly emotional death as Edd was a popular character and died while jesting with Samwell Tarly - who, in all honesty, had no right to survive as long as he did.

Edd's death, while a bit emotionally impactful given how long fans had spent enjoying his time on the Wall as a friend of both Jon and Sam, did not have much impact going forward. It is relatively quickly forgotten about, not brought up again after his body is burned, and it is not as though Edd was ever going to have too big of an impact on the fight for the Iron Throne. His death does impact the Night's Watch, though, leaving it completely without Lord Commander, something fans do not get closure on in the show.

Lyanna Mormont

Lyanna Mormont killed by a giant in Game of Thrones

Lyanna Mormont established herself as an absolute icon of Game of Thrones with her fearlessness near the end of the show, willing to put her short life on the line for her people and the people of Westeros. Her death embodied the badassery and fire fans had gotten used to from the young Lady of Bear Island.

Lyanna Mormont went out like a warrior, taking a Wight Giant with her, a Giant that undoubtedly would have killed more people in the Winterfell courtyard, which she valiantly protected. This is undoubtedly a top three death from the Battle of Winterfell as far as emotional impact goes too; Lyanna was loved by fans and admired by characters. Unfortunately, her death had little effect on the rest of the series. But, it impacted the future of the loved House Mormont, which became extinct following her and Jorah's deaths.

Theon Greyjoy

Theon accepts his impeding death in Game of Thrones

Theon Greyjoy has arguably one of the best complete character arcs in Game Of Thrones, rarely being let down by the writing like so many others were - especially in the end. His death was emotional and poetic, as well as impactful.

Again, his death meant minimal for the upcoming fight for the Iron Throne, and Yara would have ruled the Iron Islands either way. Theon's death directly impacted the Battle of Winterfell, though, as he died to save Bran's life. The few seconds that the Night King spent occupied with killing Theon could have given Arya the precious time she needed to reach and destroy the Night King. In a more real-life sense, he has perhaps the most emotionally impactful death in the battle, alongside Ser Jorah Mormont. Deaths like this helped make the Battle of Winterfell one of the show's best battles.

Beric Dondarrion

Beric Dondarrion was no stranger to death, and fans were used to seeing him get killed and brought back to life. That did not take away from his final death in the Battle of Winterfell, which was a hugely important sacrifice.

As Melisandre points out, Dondarrion fulfilled his purpose to the Lord of Light by sacrificing himself so that Arya could go and defeat the Night King. Without Dondarrion's death, the Night King may never have been defeated, making his sacrifice one of the most important in the entire series.

Ser Jorah Mormont

Jorah defends Daenerys from wights

Ser Jorah Mormont's death could easily be considered the saddest and most affecting death of 'The Long Night,' alongside Theon's, but it is not just sad; it is a crucial death to the future of Game Of Thrones and Westeros.

Jorah died as he lived his life throughout Game Of Thrones, protecting Daenerys and showing his endless loyalty to the Mother of Dragons. Without his unwavering will to protect her and fight for her cause, Daenerys would likely have died at the hands of swarms of Wights, changing the entire course of Westeros' history and the series' final episodes.

The Night King

The Nigh King holding Arya up by throat as she tries to stab him on Game Of Thrones

The death of the Night King is considered by many a massively anti-climactic moment, deeming years of build-up a waste. Although looking at it as an in-universe death, there is no doubt it has an impact, preserving the safety of the world.

Had the Night King survived, his vague motivations would have come to fruition, Bran would have died, and he likely would have wiped out the entirety of Westeros. With his death at the hands of the incomparable Arya Stark, all of that death is prevented, and the army of the dead falls. That is the extent that this death has impact-wise, it is not emotionally impactful and does little to change the course of the fight for the Iron Throne outside of depleting Daenerys' forces. However, Arya's killing him impacts the fate of civilization, and that is enough.
