Tonight marks the season 6 finale of HBO's most popular show of all time, Game of Thrones, the television adaptation of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire book series. The show's fandom has only grown as the series has gotten bigger, darker, and twistier from year to year.
With perhaps only 13 episodes of Game of Thrones left before the series ends, things seem to be heating up. Last week, the series gave us what was arguably its most epic yet chapter yet, with the incredible 'Battle of the Bastards.' The showdown for Winterfell between Jon Snow and Ramsay Bolton's forces was a long time coming, with alliances, betrayals, political intrigue, and at least one resurrection leading up to it. And things only look to get crazier moving forward.
In celebration of all things Thrones, Russian video editor Zurab (Zurik 23M on YouTube), created a fan edit (see above) of epic proportions to the tune of 'War Pigs,' by Black Sabbath. It's a pretty fitting choice, considering the lyrics of the song. The video highlights some of the series' most exciting moments, including some long lost faces, and is the perfect way to whet your appetite for the upcoming season finale.
Zurab also manages to create some great parings with the lyrics and imagery. As you watch the video, though, it is a little surprising to be reminded how many moments throughout the series involve folks burning. Zurab also contrasts some of the shows iconic moments in interesting ways -- like the twin overhead shots of the masses greeting Daenerys and Jon drowning in dying men. If it weren't for the swath of spoilery images, this would make a great trailer for the series up to this point.
There is a great deal to look forward to in the season 6 finale -- fittingly titled 'The Winds of Winter'. Perhaps most pressing the the answer to the question: What Cersei will do about her predicament with the High Sparrow? Beyond that, though, there is plenty more for the episode to deal with in the super-sized finale. For instance, what will Jon and Sansa do, now that they've finally saved their home? What will Daenerys do, now that she's poised to strike Westeros? What painful cliffhanger will torment fans until the show starts again next year? We'll find out soon enough.
The Game of Thrones season 6 finale, 'The Winds of Winter,' airs tonight at 9pm on HBO, HBO Go and HBO Now.
