The upcoming fantasy drama House of the Dragon will debut on August 21 on HBO and HBO Max. The series explores the political upheaval in House Targaryen and is set 200 years before the events of the original. With several spinoffs in development, it is safe to say, Game of Thrones is a sprawling franchise with untapped potential.

Whilst some fans are looking forward to HBO's GoT expansion slate, others are still bitter about the original's fall from grace. In any case, the franchise's popularity is bigger than ever before with several online forums and YouTube channels dedicated to the series. Thus, it is not entirely surprising that some of the most entertaining, and best Game of Thrones memes are tied to popular Reddit accounts.

Avocado Or Dragon Eggs?

The Magister of Pentos, Illyrio Mopatis presented not one but three petrified dragon eggs to Daenerys on her wedding day. Since she was raised in exile, the eggs reminded her of her Targaryen heritage and she was instantly drawn to them. Daenerys kept the eggs safe in a chest and eventually hatched them into three breathtaking dragons, namely, Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion.

This meme from Redditor Amber__xox is reminiscent of the initial period in Daenerys' life when she was no more than a pawn to her brother, Viserys. It perfectly plays on Daenerys' delightful expression to convey how avocado lovers feel about finding that perfectly ripe avocado at the supermarket.

Arya Stark, Syrio Forel, And Recycling

Arya Stark began training under the master sword-fighter, Syrio Forel while she was at King's Landing. Syrio pretty much set the foundation of Arya's early training and paved the way for her to become a ruthless assassin. He stands out as one of the most heroic side characters on Game of Thrones, owing to his bravery, loyalty to Ned Stark and Arya, and most of all, devotion to his profession.

During their lessons, Syrio would often ask Arya, "What do we say to the God of death?" signifying that a sword fighter cheated death during every single combat. This meme from Redditor KelsNotChels cleverly uses Syrio's precious words to tactfully draw attention to the fact that recycling is a need of the hour. Reason dictates that the tenable solution to manage the clutter in the still above is to donate those cardboard boxes to a waste management supplier or a recycling program.

Bran The Patient

The controversial season 8 ended with Bran the Broken's ascent to the throne. He was chosen by the leaders of the Westerosi kingdoms in the Great Council of 305 AC. The proclamation hurt the expectations of Redditors who'd rooted for many wholesome characters like Daenerys Targaryen to take the Iron Throne.

Reddit wholeheartedly believes many brave and decisive GoT characters deserved the throne, and that Bran's proclamation was neither here nor there. This meme from Redditor darmodyjimguy is an accurate representation of GoT's brand of sacrificing plotlines for shock value. Whilst Daenerys and Stannis Baratheon did all they could to claim the Iron Throne, Bran got to be the ruler of Westeros. Furthermore, the meme creator tactfully jokes that the all-knowing Bran must know all about HBO's potential GoT spin-offs, including the newly announced Jon Snow sequel.

Jon Doesn't Want It

Jon Snow's lack of proper dialogue in the tragic season 8 has spawned countless memes on the internet. He kept reiterating he didn't want the Iron Throne, and repeatedly swore his allegiance to Dany until it marred his arc.

Using Jon's infamous catch-cry, "I don't want it," this hilarious meme from Redditor kylemcg pokes fun at Kit Harington's The Telegraph interview wherein he specifically said he doesn't want to play heroic male roles going forward. That said, it also soothes the woes of Harington's fans who despite everything believe the Jon snow spinoff series is a positive development because it can provide a chance to redeem his character arc.

Sunglass Shopping

Arya sailed to the Free City of Braavos at the end of "The Children," to train with the guild of assassins known as the Faceless Men. The chamber in the meme above is the mysterious Hall of Faces located within the House of Black and White that's dedicated to the Many-Faced God.

Arya walks in a slow, reverent way to inspect pillars with shelves displaying the skinned faces of the dead in presence of Jaqen H'ghar. As such, this meme from Reddit user phurbur conveys what choosing a pair of sunglasses looks like. It accurately points out that picking the right frame and fit can sometimes be intimidating, and plain confusing.

DNA And RNA

Daenerys Targaryen's slow transformation/character evolution in Game of Thrones was evident in her outfits and hairstyles. With her growing power and stature, the complexity and density of her braids also grew.

As seen above, Redditor No-Check138's meme has picked Dany's loose frontal curls to accurately demonstrate the difference between RNA and DNA. The single strand of hair on the left represents the single helix RNA molecule and whereas the double-stranded hair on the left represents the double helix DNA molecule.

Bran Knows

The Three-Eyed Raven and the King of the Six Kingdoms - Bran's occasional creepy remarks have become fodder for memes. This hilarious one by Reddit user MrDeKer references Bran's spaced-out face in the final season of Game of Thrones. He was after all no longer a human, but instead, a living memory of Westeros.

The seemingly omniscient Bran irked and creeped fans out after Jon bent the knee to him in Game of Thrones' closing moments. Needless to say, the scene referenced in the meme, sits on top of Thrones' stack of disappointments.

Stannis The Mannis

Stannis Baratheon was many things but being a good father was certainly not one of them. The younger brother of King Robert Baratheon, Stannis was once considered one of the most skilled fighters in the realm. He believed he was the one true king of Westeros and that his rule was the only way to bring peace and order.

Stannis was married to Selyse Florent of Brightwater Keep and together they had a daughter named, Shireen. Unwilling to give up on his futile siege of Winterfell and in a last-ditch effort to turn the tide of his conquest, he sacrificed Shireen to R'hllor at the urging of priestess Melisandre. This meme from Reddit user Ambush112 is a clever barb at Stannis's parental love. He beats the likes of Balon Greyjoy and Randyll Tarly to win the title of the worst parent on Game of Thrones.

The Vile Joffrey Baratheon

Joffrey Baratheon's short reign was synonymous with tyranny, and his personality with sadism. He was difficult to please, notoriously unstable, and hard to control.

Joffrey died a dishonorable death at the Purple Wedding in season 4's "The Lion and the Rose." Notwithstanding, he's still a part of the show's first three seasons. Using Michael Scott's grumpy expression, this meme from Redditor Broladyz accurately points out that one of the harsh realities of rewatching Game of Thrones is having to sit through Joffrey's vile acts and reprehensible words.

The End Of An Era

There's no denying that the GoT fanbase felt betrayed by the show's ending. The final season was marred by plotlines that sacrificed the show's themes, and quality for shock value. Though the lack of pacing, and mishandling of characters like Daenerys Targaryen, and Jon Snow, aggravated fans, yet, bidding goodbye to Game of Thrones was incredibly hard.

2019 marked the end of an era, and this oh-so-accurate meme from Redditor imshashankkk sums up how die-hard fans feel after the show ended its run. For fans who were invested in Game of Thrones right from the start, rewatching it is a good idea until House of the Dragon lands this August.
