Although HBO's House of the Dragon has done a great job in bringing back the intimidating and magnificent dragons fans got a glimpse of in Game of Thrones, for some viewers, the bonds they have seen don't live up to the one that Daenerys shared with her children.

Although many of her enemies saw her dragons as a symbol of her power, the fans could see that they meant so much more than that. They could see that they were her life. While Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion could be caused a lot of destruction, the reason why they seemed a lot more protective over Daenerys was because she was one of the few who didn't see them as complete monsters. She got to see them at their highest as well as their lowest. That's why it's not at all surprising that many viewers have decided to return to her story to see how this bond grew and develop (with many memorable lines arriving along the way),

"Dracarys"

Command For Dragons To Breath Fire

Daenerys in chains in Game of Thrones

Though Daenerys' dragons prove to be less tamed than initially perceived, they clearly had an attachment to their mother and followed her orders. She teaches them from their hatchling state to breathe fire by using the command, "Dracarys." Daenerys had some brilliant plans that often involved the ways in which she was able to communicate with her dragons.

When she's first seen giving this command, they're only using it to cook pieces of meat for food. However, she notably uses it as a weapon at the House of the Undying against the wizard, against the master of the Unsullied, and in the final season when Drogon destroys King's Landing. Daenery's ability to train her dragons gives fans some insight into how the Targaryens' in the House of the Dragon will be able to. However, it will be interesting to see how they were able to train the creatures with prior family members to teach them.

"No One Will Take My Dragons."

Season 2, Episode 1 - While Wandering the Desert

game of thrones rhaegal drogon dragons feature

Jorah is one of Daenerys' best friends in the series, and he's always there to give her the hard truth. When they're surrounded by enemies on all side, the few left from Drogo's Khalasar have no choice but to face the harsh conditions of the seemingly endless desert. Jorah makes a point no matter where they go, people will try to take her newly hatched dragons, to which she responds with this quote.

It's clear Daenerys needs the dragons to win back the Iron Throne for her house. However, she also proves to the audience that she has a maternal connection with them. While Daenerys had very little left in the world, and therefore it makes sense she is so protective of the precious creatures, this also makes fans curious to see how Targaryens before her connected with the beast that made their house so powerful.

"When My Dragons Are Grown, We Will Take Back What Was Stolen From Me."

Season 2, Episode 4 - Outside The City Of Qarth

Things You Didn't Know About Khaleesi:: Dragons Names

From the moment the dragons appear in this series, fans can predict that Daenerys is going to use them as weapons within her future army. This scene is the first time she explicitly makes a point that her dragons are going to win her house back the Seven Kingdoms.

At this point, she's still seen a naive but bold fledgling ruler. Daenerys is a fan favorite character from the beginning, but there's no reasonable possibility she'd be able to take over Westeros at this point in her story. Similarly, in the history of the Targaryen family, the Valyrian house wouldn't have taken control of the lands if they hadn't had dragons. When watching the prequel, it will be interesting to see the distinct differences between Daenerys' power and her ancestors'.

"Fire Cannot Kill A Dragon."

Season 1, Episode 6 - After Drogo Kills Viserys

Game of Thrones Viserys Targaryen death

Back in the first season, Daenerys' has a more meek personality under the shadow of her brother, though viewers can also see her determination. The scene in which Drogo kills her brother Viserys is before her dragons are hatched, but it's still an important hint to her connection with her dragons later on.

While fire kills Viserys, Daenerys' walks out of a fire unburnt soon after. This leaves the potential for the spinoff to explain if Daenerys' unique immunity to fire has occurred elsewhere within the bloodline. While Daenerys dismisses her cruel brother, contradicting her as a villain, it does lead her to say this quote, hinting at dragons of her future.

"I Will Take What Is Mine...With Fire And Blood."

Season 2, Episode 6 - When She's Dismissed In Qarth

Though some things with her dragons contradict her as a true villain, this quote supports Daenerys as a villain. When one of the leaders in Qarth refuse to fund her war against the Baratheons and their allies, she lets her fiery side get the best of her and was unable to persuade him to see her side.

It's hard to enact her plans of fire and blood without her dragons. She fulfills her promise when she eventually crosses the Narrow Sea and then destroys King's Landing with her last remaining dragon. Had she had more Targaryen family members left alive, it's possible she could have actually held onto control for more than day.

"If You Ever Betray Me, I'll Burn You Alive."

She Threatens Varys in Season 7

Varys in Game of Thrones season 8 episode 5 The Bells

This is another quote that suggested Daenerys would take a dark turn. Though she doesn't directly speak about her dragons in this scene, the threat heavily suggests they'll be involved. In fact, when she actually does execute Varys, she does so by commanding Drogon to burn him alive.

This isn't the first time Daenerys uses her dragons to execute people. In fact, she does it several times throughout the series. While she has an army and allies at her back at this point, her dragons were responsible for the power and the reason she was able to instill fear into anyone.

"The Dragons Are My Children."

To Jon After Losing Viserion

Daenerys Targaryen with her newly hatched dragons, played by Emilia Clarke in Game of Thrones season 1

Daenerys says something of this sort twice. First, she says it to Jorah after her dragons are kidnapped in Qarth and second after Viserion is killed by the Night King in the North. She expresses her love for the dragons in these scenes, but she also divulges how hurt she is over the fact she was told she wouldn't be able to have children.

Despite the fact that Daenerys does terrible things with her dragons, her devotion and love to them is also clear. While they were one of the few certain things in her life until she loses Viserion, this does make fans wonder what kind of relationship and dedication the previous Targaryens had with their dragons.
