Simon Kinberg says that the upcoming Gambit movie has a romantic comedy vibe. The long-time X-Men movie producer and writer will make his directorial debut with next February's Dark Phoenix, but he remains involved in all other upcoming Fox Marvel films like Channing Tatum's Gambit which is slated for a June 2019 release.
It's been quite a while since Fox announced that a Gambit movie is in the cards with Tatum playing the headlining character. Originally scheduled to release in 2016, the movie suffered from several setbacks leaving it still in the development stage, and currently without a director. Gore Verbinski was the last director attached to the project but eventually left early this year. Despite the lack of any major push for it to go into production (at least nothing announced to the public), it sounds like Fox has a clear idea of what the Tatum-starrer will be.

In light of the recent release of the first trailer of Dark Phoenix, Kinberg spoke with IGN and was asked about other announced Fox Marvel properties like Gambit. Kinberg says that the movie will have a "romantic or sex comedy vibe," which fans know Tatum can pull off thanks to his roles in movies like Magic Mike and Step Up.
"When you look at Gambit. he’s a hustler and a womanizer and we just felt like there was an attitude, a swagger to him, that lent itself to romantic comedy... Deadpool was an R-rated, raunchy comedy, Logan was a western, Gambit’s gonna be a romantic comedy, and New Mutants is very decidedly a horror film."
"You know, when I say romantic comedy, I use that term loosely, in the same term that I use the term western for Logan loosely. It’s not like they’re gunslingers at high noon in Logan. It’s just a vibe. And I would say the vibe of Gambit has a romantic or sex comedy vibe to it. While it is also still very much a superhero movie with villains and heroes, as all these movies are."
Switching genres up within a superhero franchise is a tactic used by Marvel Studios to keep their films fresh. Thor: Ragnarok is a space adventure, Spider-Man: Homecoming is a coming-of-age film reminiscent of John Hughes' '80s projects, Black Panther is a familial and political narrative while Avengers: Infinity War is a mix of a lot of things, hence making it the ultimate blockbuster. As mentioned by Kinberg, Fox has been taking a similar approach with the X-Men franchise in recent years, expanding from traditional superhero antics into the raunchy comedy of Deadpool and the sober grittiness of Logan.
The impending Fox and Disney merger is expected to be finalized by summer of next year and rumor has it that Disney plans to release all finished Fox movies even after the buyout is done. However, it's still safe to say that the ultimate decision regarding the X-Men and tie-in characters like Gambit lies on Marvel Studios' president Kevin Feige's shoulders. If Marvel Studios takes charge before Gambit goes in front of the cameras (which is looking likely), the fate of the ragin' Cajun may change.
