Samsung is gearing up to launch the Galaxy Z Flip 4, its next-gen clamshell foldable, and fresh details that have surfaced reveal some pretty interesting upgrades. After a successful run with the Galaxy Z Flip 3, Samsung wants to cement its lead in the foldable smartphone segment with two new models for 2022.

While there aren't many options in the clamshell foldable segment, there are at least two new phones planned for 2022. Alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 4, Lenovo has confirmed that it will launch a third Motorola Razr foldable phone, a successor to the 2020 Razr 5G foldable smartphone. Unlike the Huawei Pocket P50 which has limited availability and is not sold in the United States, Motorola's foldable should be available in North America.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 brought some big changes such as a bigger cover display, an improved build, and an IPX8 rating. Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants has claimed in a tweet that the Galaxy Z Flip 4 will have an even larger cover display that is at least 2-inches in size. However, the exact size is not known yet, so it is impossible to say if it will be as big or larger than the 2.7-inch cover display of the Motorola Razr 5G. The news of the bigger display corroborates an earlier report.

Finally, A Bigger Battery

Despite the big upgrades to the Galaxy Z Flip 3, Samsung shipped it with the same 3,300mAh battery capacity as its predecessor. It also kept wired charging support pegged at 15W which is painfully slow in a world where 150W fast charging exists. Although no details have been revealed about the Galaxy Z Flip 4 getting improved fast charging, Twitter user chunvn888 claimed that the next-gen foldable will pack a slightly bigger 3,400mAh battery, which is an increase of just about 3 percent. Samsung uses a two-cell design for the battery of the Galaxy Z Flip series which helps with the balance of the phone, and according to GalaxyClub, the bigger of the two cells has received a bump in capacity.

A larger battery points to the phone supporting faster charging of at least 25W which is available on the affordable Galaxy A53 5G. Unfortunately, a charger will most likely not be included in the box.  The tipster chunvn8888 also said that the Galaxy Z Flip 4 “is basically the s version” of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 with minimal changes. This suggests rumors about an under-display camera and triple rear cameras could turn out to be false as those can be termed significant changes.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is expected to be powered by a Qualcomm processor, specifically the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 that's used in the Galaxy S22 series. The phone should retain its 120Hz refresh rate, side-mounted fingerprint scanner, and centered punch-hole design. Samsung expects the phone will be a success like the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and has made plans to ship up to 70 percent more units. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 and its bigger sibling, the Z Fold 4 should launch in the second half of 2022.
