Many unique individuals throughout Marvel's history have come and gone serving as the Heralds of Galactus, but one surprising Herald actually managed to have an unexpected happy ending. The Silver Surfer, Firelord, and Nova are just some of the more notable names to work alongside the Devourer, of Worlds but one of the more forgotten names in this lineage is Praeter. What makes Praeter especially unique compared to other Heralds is that Praeter was a human.

Praeter was first introduced in 2011 in Mighty Thor #1 by Matt Fraction and Olivier Coipel. Originally he was merely a preacher from Oklahoma named Pastor Mike, most notable for protesting the fact that Asgard and the chaos it brought sat so close to his own hometown. Bearing witness to Galactus touching down on Earth land, Mike begged Galactus to spare the planet. A compromise was eventually reached, and the Silver Surfer wound up personally asking Mike to take his place as a Herald to Galactus. Pastor Mike agreed, re-dubbing himself as Praeter in the process.

Afterward, he was never to be seen again in the series, though Galactus appeared in later issues alongside other, darker Heralds. It would've been safe to assume that Praeter may have been killed at some point. After all, the cosmic galaxy is no place for a human and he likely was always destined for a tragic fate by embarking into the unknown so suddenly. However, he unexpectedly resurfaces unscathed in 2020's Thor #1 by Donny Cates and Nic Klein alongside the rest of Galactus' former Heralds. While no indication is given as to why he stopped working for Galactus, it would appear as he disappeared because he simply stopped working for Galactus and everything turned out fine.

This is particularly interesting, let alone surprising, due to the fact that walking away from Galactus doesn't sound like it could ever yield favorable results. Yet, it would appear as though Praeter was able to simply walk away from Galactus with no qualms taken from the Seeder of Worlds. It puts Galactus himself into a totally new light.

Rather than position himself as some no-nonsense totalitarian ruling over his Heralds with an iron fist, a small touch like this makes it seem like to some extent at least, Galactus actually cares for his Heralds. He's not going to bury one under his boot just because he decided the cosmic life wasn't for him. Instead, Galactus simply seems to have seen Praeter off to his future endeavors, wishing him the best in his future. It may not sound like much, but Marvel gives more of a wholesome, happy ending to Praeter than anyone would expect involving Galactus.
