Despite what seemed like a surefire hit project, it looks as though FX’s planned Deadpool animated series that was to be co-showrun by Donald and Stephen Glover is no longer moving forward. The series was announced last year with a straight-to-series order for a 10-episode season that was intended to air on FXX, which is already home to every episode of The Simpsons, as well as the long-running adult animated series Archer.
In fact, Archer animation house Floyd County was reportedly in charge of bringing the Merc With a Mouth to animated life later this year. That not only won’t be happening now, but it appears that even though the project was in development for nearly a year, production had reportedly yet to begin and there wasn’t even a script written for series. Given Glover’s busy schedule as of late, with not only FX’s own critically acclaimed Atlanta Robbin’ Season currently on the air but also the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story set to hit theaters soon, it’s easy to see how Deadpool could have fallen by the wayside.
As reported by Variety, the network made a statement regarding the animated series, saying the decision was reached due to “creative differences,” though the project falling through will not have any effect on the network’s deal with Marvel Television saying, “FX and Marvel have an ongoing relationship through our partnership on ‘Legion,’ which will continue.”
The news will likely come as a big disappointment for fans of Deadpool and those eager to see what a creative talent like Glover might be able to do with the character and the freedom of the animated format. Additionally, FX and FXX have a strong reputation with regard to the quality of their series, which often skew more toward mature themes and content, making the proposed animated series a perfect fit for Marvel’s violent, foul-mouthed character. There’s no word on whether or not there are plans to continue with another Deadpool animated series at FX or another network — such as FOX — at the moment.
The future of any potential Deadpool series might also be decided by Disney’s pending acquisition of 20th Century Fox assets, of which the character is a part. So although this project didn’t work out, there may still be hope for an animated Deadpool series in the future.
Atlanta continues next Thursday with ‘Barbershop’ @10pm on FX.
