Spoilers for Infinite Frontier #0 ahead!

Fans have been speculating whether or not Future State was an Elseworlds story or the actual future of DC's heroes, and in Infinite Frontier #0, its status in the larger DC Universe is revealed. The recently concluded Future State event showcased the future of the DC Universe, stretching all the way until time’s end. Now, at the cusp of Infinite Frontier, their next big publishing initiative, DC has created a new status quo for the universe, full of endless story possibilities.

Future State was a spin-off of Dark Nights: Death Metal, a massive event that saw the heroes of the Multiverse face off against a cosmic powered Batman Who Laughs and Perpetua. The Hands, an extra-dimensional force from the larger Omniverse, almost destroyed the Multiverse at the event’s end, until they elected to spare and remake it, inspired by Wonder Woman’s selfless example. Future State immediately followed, picking up not only threads from Death Metal but also various DC titles; among other things, the event saw Swamp Thing take over the Earth in the far future and the dissolution of the Green Lantern Corps.

The one-shot reveals that an ascended Wonder Woman has been approached by the Quintessence, a powerful group of beings who watch over the Multiverse; they wish her to join their ranks. Wonder Woman saw the entirety of the events of Future State and when asked if it was the future, she was informed by the Spectre it was a “possible future” and that it was now up to humanity whether or not they embraced it. From there, the Quintessence takes her on a tour of the reconstituted Multiverse—the world of Infinite Frontier.

While the Spectre’s comment about a “possible future” may seem like a traditional comic book cop out, there are signs the world glimpsed may be coming to pass. Recent events in the Batman family of titles has seen Gotham taken over by leaders who are opposed to vigilante activities, and that might possibly blossom into the fascist, anti-vigilante regime of the Magistrate seen in Future State. Jon Kent, the son of Lois and Clark, is the Superman of this world, something that has been hinted at in the Legion of Super-Heroes. The penultimate issue of Green Lantern: Season Two saw the Guardians prepare to restructure the Corps—could this lead to the end of the Corps depicted in Future State?

Comics being what they are, however, there is a strong possibility that one day some, if not all, of Future State will be retconned. But the exciting story possibilities that have come out of it will prove irresistible for future creative teams, ensuring we have not seen the last of these characters. Infinite Frontier #0, featuring a rotating team of writers and artists, is in stores now and on all digital comic outlets.
