Futurama provides audiences with several funny and interesting main characters. The Planet Express delivery company crew is like one big family. However, it comes together thanks to several different personalities. Furthermore, some characters are more likable than others.
Some personalities like Philip J. Fry are clearly lovable, while others like Kif Kroker have the tendency to turn fans off. Futurama has changed a lot since the pilot, but the show's memorable characters remain consistent. The personalities audiences meet in the series prove their likability with their behavior and attitude.
Zapp Brannigan
Zapp is an antagonist in Futurama, but fans wouldn't necessarily call him a villain. He causes trouble for the Planet Express crew through his buffoonery rather than maliciousness. However, he is one of the least likable main characters in the series.
Zapp is hard to like because he doesn't have many admirable qualities. He's a self-centered chauvinist and consistently pesters Leela in hopes of gaining her affection. Zapp consistently puts Leela and Fry in harm's way and tortures his crewmate Kif with his incompetence. Zapp is funny to watch, but his likable qualities are hard to recognize.
Kif Kroker
Kif is a well-intentioned lieutenant in Zapp Brannigan's ship Nimbus. Kif is a friend of the Planet Express crew and is a romantic partner to Amy Wong. Kif is kind and can be charming, but his negative qualities outway the positive.
Kif is hard to like because he is cowardly. He is complacent in Zapp's incompetent behavior, and rarely stands up to Brannigan, or up for himself in front of his other critics like Amy Wong's parents. If Kif could muster up more confidence, he'd be more likable to audiences.
Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth
Professor Farnsworth is one of Futurama's most multi-dimensional characters. He is a brilliant old scientist, but his actions reveal he has several blind spots as a result of his advanced age of over 100 years old. He is funny and comes up with ideas that make for some of Futurama's best episodes that never get old.
However, his lack of empathy makes him less likable than some of the other members of his crew. The professor often puts his crew in danger and rarely provides precautions in which to protect them. When characters like Fry express their sorrows, often resulting from botched missions, The Professor is unfeeling.
Amy Wong
Amy Wong is one of the most cheerful members of the Planet Express crew. Her bubbly personality contrasts with her largely cynical co-workers, and she often calls attention to how "cute" she is. Amy is much more pleasant than many of her peers, but she has unappealing qualities of her own.
Amy is spoiled. She's the daughter of two wealthy owners of the western hemisphere of Mars. As such, Amy is somewhat elitist, often saying things like, "I'm too rich to be kidnapped." She's shallow, and her air-headed focus on wealth and looks can turn off fans.
Turanga Leela
Fans of Futurama know Leela is one of the show's heroes. She is the captain of the Planet Express ship, and the other main characters usually fall under her command. She is smart, strong, and a focused leader for the group. However, she has flaws making her less likable than some of her peers.
Leela is a leader and exhibits some of the negative qualities of a tough boss. She can be pushy and overbearing, contrasting the carefree nature of other crew members like Fry and Bender. If Leela could allow herself and others to have a little more fun, she would be a more appealing character.
Hermes Conrad
While Fry and Leela tackle missions head-on in the Planet Express ship, Hermes handles operations behind the scenes. Hermes is a self-described bureaucrat and is passionate about rifling through red tape for the rest of the crew. He even sings about it in one of Futurama's best songs.
Hermes is obsessive about crunching numbers for Planet Express, and his type-A personality can come off as abrasive. Furthermore, he often scolds the crew and isn't particularly nice to his co-workers. However, Hermes' hard work for others and consistent one-liners make him one of the show's more likable main characters.
Bender Bending Rodriguez
Bender is the Planet Express resident robot, and fans love the show's perhaps most famous character. Bender is funny, and a consistent source of entertainment in the show. He keeps audiences captivated, whether he is singing on stage with Beck or spouting one of Futurama's most hilarious quotes.
Bender has plenty of negative qualities. He lies, steals, and is generally self-serving. However, his "bad boy" persona is put on, and his crimes are generally victimless. Bender charms audiences just like the people he meets on screen. Despite his selfish behavior, he is one of the most fun characters in the show.
Dr. John A. Zoidberg
Dr. Zoidberg is the Planet Express crew's staff physician. Despite his title, he is often seen acting unprofessionally, ironically eating food out of dumpsters despite his elite job. Zoidberg turns his crew off when he is seen eating expired food or squirting ink impulsively.
However, Zoidberg is one of the most appealing characters in the show because he is so caring. He rarely acts selfishly, and if he does, changes his behavior after a guilt-induced crying fit. He loves the crew and is the only character who uses his $300 government refund on others, buying homeless strangers and his friends a meal.
Philip J. Fry
Fry is the protagonist, so it shouldn't be a surprise to see him as the show's most likable character. Fry's quotes are some of Futurama's funniest lines. However, Fry is so affable because he is kind. He loves his friends and puts himself at risk for their happiness throughout the show.
When Bender seems lost forever in the abyss of outer space, Fry never gives up his search for him. When Planet Express is going to be bought out, Fry is devastated, asking his friends, "you'd rather be rich than work together?" Fry's boyish charm is unmatched, and despite his shortcomings, draws audiences in with his good nature.
