The Funny Face App will either be obvious or puzzling, depending on whether retro animation on an iPhone is of interest or not. The idea is to make a funny and eye-catching video that definitely works, even though the use of this app will likely result in a generous number of eye-rolls and raspberries.

Animation has advanced at light speed in the last few years, giving every iPhone owner capabilities that would have once been reserved for Hollywood movie studios. Apple's own Clips app allows Animoji to be animated in real-time with the user's voice and have other effects and text overlaid afterward. It can even transcribe live speech as the video is being recorded, and display as on-screen titles.

The Funny Face App is completely free and, unlike many other face-swapping apps, requires no subscription, and includes no ads. It first appeared in the iPhone App Store in 2020 and hasn't been updated since. However, it's compatible with the latest iPhone and can swap a selfie for the face of a person in several different scenes. Simply install the app from the App Store to get started. The selection is somewhat limited and the oval cut-out pasted on the face in the video is not blended at all. Some video clips include rotation and smoothing in the tracking and others are jittery or keep an upright position. It's kind of terrible and whether this was intended or not, the result is quite funny. For a much more advanced version of face-swapping with realistic results, check out the Reface app.

iPhone Reface App

Apple iPhone Reface App

The Reface app for iPhone is at the opposite extreme, creating what appears to be realistic videos from scenes from popular movies and TV shows while mapping the iPhone user's face onto the actor's body. The face is blended and shaded to match the original video so perfectly that it might not even stand out as different unless the face swap has dramatic differences. Reface uses advanced AI to process this effect with amazing precision and the library of videos is vast and continually updated.

While Funny Face App is totally free, Reface has spent significant time and resources on the app and content which explains the need for ads or a subscription. The free version is ad-supported with a subscription required to remove ads and unlock additional content. Both iPhone apps have access to the user's face and other details, so that's worth considering if there are any concerns about anonymity. Reface does have a menu option to Erase My Personal Data, which should alleviate most concerns. The iPhone has a ton of funny face apps to choose from, but these two are good examples of the high and low ends.
