It might be not be classified as such, but The Vampire Diaries is full of comedy. The characters are what made the series such a success, and their humor, in spite of the horrible things happening around them, prevents the show from blending in with other supernatural dramas.

Sitcoms are known for having running gags, or jokes that continue to pop up throughout the series. The Vampire Diaries has its own version of this element, and the writers even use it to incorporate fans' thoughts within the show. There are plenty of hilarious aspects that viewers love, and are consistently referenced during the series' eight seasons.

Katherine's Arrogance

Katherine Pierce eating a stawberry in The Vampire Diaries.

Katherine is considered to be a villain, but she's one of the most beloved characters in the series. Her confidence is unmatched, and she thinks she's better than just about everyone. Whenever Katherine pops up, she never misses an opportunity to mention how dull Elena is in comparison to her.

When all three Petrova doppelgangers had to meet up in the Salvatore Boarding House, Katherine announced "the cute one's here," upon her arrival. They all look the same, but somehow, Katherine wasn't wrong about being the cutest.

Klaus And Stefan's Banter

Klaus and Stefan have always had a love/hate relationship. They were best friends back in the day, but Klaus erased his memories and made Stefan forget about both him and Rebekah. They bicker like an old married couple, and Stefan even tells Klaus, "You're using your calm voice today. Who's getting killed?"

Klaus's attachment to Stefan is commented on by more than one person, as Klaus can never bring himself to kill his partner in crime, no matter how many times Stefan betrays him. A fan-favorite line is when an exasperated Klaus asks Stefan, "What do you want from me? A secret brotherhood handshake?"

Kai And Social Media

Kai takes a selfie with Damon in The Vampire Diaries.

Since Kai wasn't in the show for long, it wasn't as much a running joke it was just plain funny. When Kai returns to the land of the living, Alaric calls Damon and asks him why he just got a notification saying that @cobrakai1972 tweeted for the first time in four years.

While he's scarfing down one of his first real meals since being back, Kai makes Damon pose for a photo with him, wearing a hilarious expression, and saying, "selfie city" as he captures it.

Bourbon At Any Time Of The Day

The episodes that don't feature bourbon in some way are slim to none. Although it's not clear how, it's been mentioned that alcohol curbs vampires' cravings, so Damon, especially, always seems to have some on hand. Whether it's morning, afternoon, or night, bourbon is always the go-to drink.

Supernatural creatures can handle alcohol much better than humans can, so their drinking is seen as normal. To commemorate their time on The Vampire Diaries, actors Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley even came up with their own bourbon company called, "Brother's Bond."

Elena Being The Center Of Attention

Elena suspects Stefan has feelings for Katherine in The Vampire Diaries.

Elena is a character that viewers either love or hate. Many fans found her to be self-centered and condescending, and it was a bit puzzling why all the characters were so obsessed with her. The show acknowledges this and characters call Elena out on it constantly.

When her humanity is off, Caroline speaks her mind when she says Elena always has a way of making things about herself. After Elena starts hallucinating from the hunter's curse, Katherine appears to her, annoyed that once again everything's all about poor Elena.

Damon's Facial Expressions

One of the best things about Damon is Ian Somerhalder's ability to portray a million emotions with one look. Damon might be closed off, but he doesn't have to speak to give away what he's feeling. Whether he's sad, happy, or just plain indifferent, it's all too easy to tell.

The many faces of Damon Salvatore is a fan-favorite aspect of the series, and sometimes it seems impossible that a single person can look so different depending on their mood. But, somehow, Damon manages to keep a variety of expressions going throughout the eight seasons of the show.

Stefan's Animal Blood Diet

Stefan frowning in TVD

Because of Stefan's addiction to human blood, he has to stick to an animal-only diet to prevent himself from losing control. The other characters think it's a bit ridiculous, even if he is doing it for the right reasons.

As usual, Damon cracks the most jokes about it and tells his brother to "give his regards to the squirrels," when Stefan goes hunting. Damon never passes up an opportunity to convince Elena that Stefan likes to eat adorable animals, such as kittens and puppies.

Klaus's Dinner Parties

Stefan attends Klaus and Rebekah's dinner party in The Vampire Diaries.

Even the oldest vampire in the history of time likes to have a good meal. But it is surprising how much Klaus loves throwing fancy dinner parties. The events are especially hysterical because of how much effort Klaus puts into them.

Whether he makes the food or compels others to do it for him, it's still a lot of work. The parties almost always involve threats or casual stabbings after everyone drinks their wine, and the juxtaposition with the instrumental music that plays in the background only makes it funnier.

Stefan's Diary

Characters like to poke fun at Stefan's broodiness, and his extremely dramatic diary entries only add fuel to the fire. The show's decision to make fun of how over-the-top his writing is, helps it become more fun and less cheesy.

Katherine flips through Stefan's diary as if it's the morning paper, but Damon has the most fun with his brother's journaling hobby. He comes up with an entry he thinks would be fitting and says, "Dear Diary, a chipmunk asked me my name today. I told him it was Joe. That lie will haunt me forever."

Damon's Nicknames

Caroline and Damon standing next to each other

Damon's nicknames are hands down the best running joke in The Vampire Diaries. His ability to come up with them on a whim is astounding, and in a weird way, a lot of them are fitting. Caroline is "vampire barbie," while Rebekah is "barbie Klaus."

Damon's nicknames for Elena change on a daily basis, but one of the most common is "judgy." He's also referred to her as "Buffy" and "Warrior Princess" when she's training. Because Bonnie is Damon's best friend, the nickname "Bon-Bon" is especially cute and lacks malice. Depending on the day, Stefan is either, "Shady Stefan" or "Saint Stefan."
