The vastness of Skyrim is one of its best features, and the sheer amount of programming and storyboarding that has gone into its creation is a gift to gamers. That being said, the original version of the game was released with a number of minor bugs, some of which have now been adopted by fans as part of the experience.

In addition to algorithmic glitches, there are a few events that occasionally make players pause and think, perplexed by what's happening to/around their character. With several updates, the frequency of these generally amusing instances has decreased, but fans remember (and make infinite memes of) the funniest Skyrim situations that make very little to no sense.

Death By Chicken

Skyrim Funniest Events — Chickens in Riverwood

Chickens are commonplace in Skyrim, and they are among the weakest entities in the entire game (5 HP & ). However, it is extremely risky to randomly kill or attack these domesticated birds, especially where other characters are observing, because the Dragonborn instantly gets a bounty on their head.

What's more baffling is that villagers usually try to attack the player when this happens, an overly violent reaction to such a tiny crime. Then again, it's worth it just to see Serana reanimate dead chickens to fight on the Dragonborn's behalf.

Does Nazeem Even Go To The Cloud District?

Nazeem and the Cloud District

Nazeem is known (and hated) for his audacity, asking the Dragonborn if they "get to the Cloud District very often," and immediately following the question with, "Oh, what am I saying, of course you don't." The irony is that he is himself rarely seen in the Cloud District, which is the elite section of Whiterun and includes Jarl Balgruuf's Dragonsreach.

Nazeem presumably rents a chamber in The Drunken Huntsman, as this is where he can be found resting. When not asleep, he ambles through the Plains District market.

Couriers Are Sometimes In Their Underwear

Skyrim Funniest Events — Couriers in underwear

Couriers are the postmen of Skyrim, but it's bizarrely the same person who delivers letters to the Dragonborn, although his attire changes now and then. Speaking of clothing, there have been occasions when the Courier has arrived dressed in nothing more than a loincloth (an ancient form of underwear.)

Players have stated that this could happen if the Courier dies and respawns on the way to deliver the letter, but the whole birthday suit glitch in the game is fraught with comical inconsistencies.

When Characters Should Be Dead (But Aren't)

Skyrim Funniest Events — Arrow in the face

Most characters in the game, whether villains or otherwise, are not subject to locational damage, which means that landing an attack on any part of their body will have identical health-point losses.

However, as long as their health is above the minimum required, they tend to be unharmed despite arrows poking out of their faces. It's morbidly hilarious to watch them waltz around as if they're perfectly fine when they clearly shouldn't be.

"Must Have Been My Imagination"

Skyrim Funniest Events — Invisible players

In a real-life scenario, getting struck with an arrow (regardless of Stealth level), would lead to the target becoming aware of a hostile presence, and, within seconds, the entire area would know and begin hunting for the assailant.

In Skyrim, using the Sneak ability means that the characters attacked often don't recognize that anything's wrong, and rarely even raise an alarm. In fact, many of them say "must have been my imagination/wind" in response. Because arrows appear from nowhere, apparently.

Characters With Inconsistent Motivation

Skyrim Funniest Events — Dragon attack

A lot of the side-quests in Skyrim are offered to the Dragonborn by minor NPCs, most of whom are small business owners, laborers, merchants, and so on. It is clear that few of them possess combat ability because their requirements usually involve the player eradicating an infestation of Mudcrabs or passing along romantic missives.

That is unless a Dragon swoops into town — these previously feeble NPCs are magically energized and rush into battle chanting hilariously hyperbolic war expressions.

Why Do Guards Always Want To Narrate Their Sob Stories?

Skyrim — Guard talks about once being an adventurer before taking an arrow in the knee

Meeting new NPCs is an adventure in Skyrim, but why do the Hold guards perennially talk about their dreams, ambitions, failures, not to mention making excuses for all three? They keep talking about "being an adventurer" until they allegedly "took an arrow in the knee."

Which is fine, of course, but the believability fades when guards from Markarth to Riften recite the exact same dialogue. NPCs have a habit of blurting out their pre-coded lines if the Dragonborn even brushes past them, a scenario that's always wacky because of how incongruous certain statements with the context of the scene.

When NPCs Make Avoidable Mistakes

Skyrim Funniest Events — Lydia activating a trap

Skyrim has dozens and dozens of underground playable locations, following the Dungeon trend common to the RPG genre. As expected, there are comatose Draugr waiting to pounce on any intruders as well as a few puzzles to get through certain areas. There are also quite a few traps strewn across each Dungeon, and none of them are exactly hard to identify.

So it's rather absurd that NPCs, like Followers, regularly trigger well-lit stepping-stone traps that are right in front of them (a mixture of amusing and annoying that varies with the Dragonborn's health level.) NPCs are also famous for attempting to phase into solid objects; although they slip through sometimes, they often end up ludicrously glued to the game environment.

Magical Creature Battle Royale

Skyrim Funniest Events — Dragon vs Mammoth

It seems that most enemy factions in Skyrim are as willing to attack and kill each other as they would the Dragonborn. This can lead to some pretty funny outcomes during, say, a Dragon, a Mammoth, and a Sabre Cat encounter.

The creatures begin battling at full power, which is great to watch but is simultaneously helpful for the Dragonborn if the animals have similar HP. After their fight ends, the player can easily defeat the survivor and claim overall victory for themselves. It's quite a sight to see all these legendary creatures launch into a fight.

The Giant Club Smash

Skyrim Funniest Events — Giant club smash

Giants are peaceful beings, content with their nomadic life of Mammoth-herding. They are also overwhelmingly powerful, carrying enormous wooden clubs that raise clouds of dirt into the air. It is nearly impossible to defeat a Giant early in the game, at least by using close-combat techniques.

This is because their final attacks launches the player to a hilariously exaggerated altitude; the Dragonborn is powerless to stop it. The Giant club smash glitch never gets old.
