For so long, The Walt Disney Company has introduced to the world a myriad of memorable characters. If they are heroes or sidekicks, they're cute and loyal. And if they are villains or evil minions, they are scary or social outcasts. But one feature that the good guys and bad guys all share is that they're all funny.
In the animation world, providing laughs is as important as delivering a life lesson. And in the past decade, many characters arrived at the funny Disney characters' hall.
Inside Out's Fear
Disney Pixar's Inside Out is one of the best depictions of human emotions on screen and it explores the concept of teen depression beautifully. Intertwined with its incredible dramatic narrative are amusing moments of comic relief. Most of them are provided by one of the film's best characters: Fear.
As his name implies, he controls Riley's fears and is important to keeping her safe. Fear is the protagonist of many laughable scenes inside Riley's head and provides a much needed comedic break to help the audience navigate the story's depths.
Frozen's Oaken
In ninth place is everyone's favorite trading post owner, Oaken, from Frozen. When Anna sees Oaken's store - and sauna - in the middle of the blizzard, she's relieved to have found help. She immediately goes inside and upon seeing Anna, Oaken announces a summer sale, professing what would become one of the most well-known quotes in the Frozen franchise: "Hoo-hoo. Summer Blowout!"
Everything about Oaken is funny: his quick-witted remarks, his manners, his impressive height. The only reason he places so far down on this list is because of the size of his role.
Wreck-It Ralph's KnowsMore
KnowsMore is another hilarious character with a small but noteworthy role. He is the impersonation of a search engine, and, just like the websites we know so well, he can't help but guess what you're about to say, auto-filling your words for you. Ralph and Vanellope use him to get to the eBay website, and fans get to see him at work.
KnowsMore's frustration with people's lack of interest in getting to know him better and barely showing appreciation for his efforts adds to the comedy, and, of course, the fact that he actually knows everything and can comprehensively explain to Ralph what caused his problems.
Big Hero 6's Baymax
Baymax is an inflatable computerized robot created to serve as a healthcare companion on the Disney movie Big Hero 6. What makes Baymax so comical is his matter-of-fact thought process: as a robot, he can't really read between the lines, so he often misses social cues.
His inflatable body also leads to some pretty funny physical jokes, and his dynamic with Hiro, who's been dealing with grief from losing his brother, is endearing. Fans of the character were more than excited to hear that Baymax just got his own series on Disney+.
Tangled's Maximus
Tangled was Disney's animated feature release of 2010, and it retells the story of Rapunzel. But in this new version, the story is a lot funnier than the fable many are already familiar with. One of the reasons is Maximus, the Corona Royal Guard horse that ends up with Rapunzel and Flynn in their journey. Maximus is fearless, takes his job very seriously, and hates Flynn.
Their rivalry provides many of the funny scenes in Tangled and his determination and competence to stop the criminal are commendable. Maximus is probably the smartest character in the whole movie and the source of many giggles.
Zootopia's Flash Slothmore
Flash Slothmore is a DMV (Department of Mammal Vehicles) clerk in Zootopia. The audience meets him when Judy and Nick need to run a plate and are in a hurry. Unlucky for them, all the DMV employees are sloths and, even though Flash is the quickest one around, he is still slow. Referencing the real animal, this three-toed sloth operates in slow motion, in a clear reference to the real-life DMV's notorious slow service.
Although Flash has just a small amount of screentime, he provides one of the movie's funniest scenes in the movie, and watching Office Judy's impatience, made worse by Nick's indulging in the conversation, is hysterical.
Wreck-It Ralph's Vanellope Von Schweetz
Vanellope is Ralph's tiny companion, and she's featured in both movies in the Wreck-It Ralph franchise. Voiced by comedian Sarah Silverman, it's no surprise she is hilarious. Vanellope is energetic, sassy, outgoing, and very sarcastic and her comical side is really explored in her dynamic with tough but insecure Ralph.
Vanellope has many great moments that provided the fans with intense giggles, but one, in particular, had the fans go crazy: when she meets all the Disney princesses and concludes that she's pretty much a princess herself. This scene alone puts Vanellope on the list of funniest characters.
Moana's Maui
Maui is comical from top to bottom. He's boisterous, mischievous, very pretentious but, ultimately, a good-hearted demi-god. He starts out as Moana's enemy before he joins her mission to return the heart to Te-Fiti. The equally buff Dwayne Johnson plays Maui and, part of the character's narcissism is due to his physique, a clear reference to Johnson.
Maui has so many comical moments it's hard to pick the best, but his performance in the song "You're Welcome" is definitely worthy of an honorable mention, and his sense of self-entitlement is the source of many of his jokes.
Frozen's Anna
The former princess/current Queen Anna of Arendelle is one of Disney fans' favorite characters of all time. Following so many princesses who lacked personality or strength, Frozen's Anna came to change it all.
She's quirky, honest, outspoken, and strong. Anna isn't afraid to say what's on her mind and to truly be herself - even when it's a little bit embarrassing. Anna snores, makes fart jokes, and is an ugly crier, and her quick responses put her in more awkward situations than not.
Frozen's Olaf
The funniest character introduced by Disney in the past decade is everyone's favorite snowman, Olaf. We first meet Olaf in 2013, when the original Frozen movie came out. He is the product of Anna's imagination and Elsa's magical powers, but he has a personality of his own.
Olaf is clueless, eager to help, a chatterbox, and very emotional. He provides most of the franchise's comic relief and is such a fan-favorite that he got to be the protagonist of two short films, Olaf's Frozen Adventure and Once Upon A Snowman, and the short series, At Home With Olaf.
