While both Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen alternated in portraying Michelle Tanner throughout Full House, the twins appeared together on-screen in several episodes. Like many TV shows featuring young children, Michelle Tanner was played by a pair of twins, which is commonplace for infant and toddler characters due to child labor laws and the ability to switch the kids if one prevents a scene from progressing. As the Olsen twins and Michelle Tanner grew older, both girls continued to play the Full House character, even though it became easier to tell Mary-Kate and Ashley apart as Michelle.

Throughout their time on Full House playing the youngest Tanner child, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were launched into notable child stardom, with the girls eventually embarking on their own films when not filming Full House. In their films, Mary-Kate and Ashley would always appear on-screen together, thus making it more intriguing to have the two act alongside one another in Full House. When the Olsen twins reached an age where it would be reasonable for only one actor to play Michelle, Full House producers considered firing Ashley, but not Mary-Kate. Before a decision on the Olsen twins could be made, Uncle Jesse actor John Stamos stepped in and made sure both girls would continue portraying Michelle, which they did until Full House’s season 8 series finale.

Michelle Tanner remains the Olsen twins’ most famous role, especially because the twins left their acting career behind after so many years of constant filming in their youth. When the majority of Full House’s cast returned for the revival series Fuller House, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen chose not to reprise their role, thus leaving the character out of the series. While many found ways to distinguish Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen as Michelle between scenes in Full House, the sitcom would sometimes make it easier for audiences at home by having both on-screen at the same time. Here’s a breakdown of every Full House episode in which both Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen appear on-screen together, and which character each twin plays.

Season 1, Episode 19, “The Seven-Month Itch Part 1"

Full House Mary Kate Ashley Olsen Michelle Together

Even as infants, Full House leaned into the charm of the Olsen twins, with a season 1 episode showing both girls in the same scene. In Full House season 1, episode 19, “The Seven-Month Itch Part 1,” Uncle Jesse has a dream in which he has to take care of two Michelles, thus doubling the nightmare of the 24-year-old already caring for one baby. In Jesse’s dream, both Mary-Kate and Ashley run into his room wearing the same pink pajamas asking him to change and feed them. The girls then make a series of scary faces to Uncle Jesse when asking him, contributing to his nightmare of having even more people nagging at him. In the same dream sequence, a bug-eyed camera has each Full House character making requests to Jesse, with Ashley being held by Dave Coulier’s Uncle Joey and Mary-Kate in the arms of Bob Saget’s Danny Tanner.

Season 4, Episode 1, “Greek Week”

Full House Mary-Kate Ashley Michelle Melina

The second time that Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen appear side-by-side on Full House is in the season 4 premiere. This is also the only occasion on Full House in which the twins portray a character other than Michelle Tanner and where their simultaneous on-screen appearance isn’t part of a fantasy or dream sequence. When Jesse’s Greek family, also the Tanner kids’ extended family, comes to visit, the daughter of his cousin ventures along as well. The Tanners are surprised when the four-year-old Greek girl, Melina, looks exactly like Michelle, except she has brown hair and speaks Greek. Melina was played on-screen by Mary-Kate Olsen while Ashley maintained the role of Michelle Tanner. The fun part about this Full House episode was that the girls were able to interact with each other as their own characters, with neither competing over who got to play the real Michelle.

Season 5, Episode 19, “The Devil Made Me Do It”

Full House Mary-Kate Ashley Olsen Good & Bad Michelle

The next season, Full House worked in a way for both Mary-Kate and Ashley to interact together, likely because of the positive reception of season 4’s “Greek Week” episode. In Full House’s season 5 episode “The Devil Made Me Do It,” Michelle goes down to Jesse’s studio alone when she was told not to, with a physical manifestation of her conscience appearing when she is about to touch an instrument. The “good Michelle” tells her to remember Jesse’s rule while the “bad Michelle” taunts her into the temptation of playing with the instrument, with Uncle Jesse then catching Michelle. Throughout the Full House episode, Michelle’s good conscience and bad influence visit her again, with the episode ending in Michelle finally making the right choice.

Considering most devil-on-the-shoulder TV scenarios use another character entirely or the same actor, Full House was in an interesting place to use the twins to speak to each other as Michelle’s inner conscience. However, since there are only two Olsen twins instead of three triplets, one of the twins plays two versions of Michelle. Mary-Kate plays “good Michelle” who wears the pink dress, flower crown, and curly hair. Ashley Olsen plays “bad Michelle” who is at times edited into the episode, meaning Ashley is also playing the real Michelle in scenes with “good Michelle.” When there is only a scene with “bad Michelle” and the real Michelle Tanner, Mary-Kate Olsen plays the latter Full House character.

Season 8, Episode 24, “Michelle Rides Again Part 2”

Mary-Kate and; Ashley Olsen as Michelle looking at each other in Full House Finale

As the final episode of Full House, it makes sense why the series included a setup for both Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen to appear alongside one another, even if it wasn’t necessary for the plot. In the final episode, Michelle hits her head after a horse-riding incident, which causes her to lose her memory. Michelle then spends the season 8 episode trying to regain her memory, which involves the character having conversations with a physical manifestation of her memory. Mary-Kate Olsen plays the real Michelle, while Ashley Olsen portrays Michelle’s memory, with this episode being the final appearance of both twins and the character of Michelle in Full House’s franchise.
