John Stamos was working on a Full House movie in the late 2000s, what happened to it? Before Netflix picked up the sequel spin-off Fuller House, the actor was already working behind-the-scenes to bring the Tanners back into mainstream media. One of his endeavors was a feature film that would recast the show's full cast of characters.

Debuting in the late '80s and running until the mid-90s, the classic ABC sitcom focused on the Tanner family. Newly-widowed Danny (Bob Saget) alongside brother-in-law Jesse (Stamos) and best friend Joey (Dave Coulier) raised three young girls - DJ (Candace Cameron Bure), Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) and Michelle (Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen). Thanks to Full House's general appeal due to relatable plot lines about parenting, it remains to be a favorite rewatch for fans as all seasons are available for streaming on Netflix. The primary case returned to the iconic Tanner San Francisco home in 2016 with Fuller House, which now centers on DJ, Stephanie, and their neighbor, Kimmy (Andrea Barber), but it could've been quite different.

John Stamos' Plan For A Full House Movie

Full House cast

John Stamos also serves as an executive producer on Fuller House and is one of the primary creative forces behind the show as he has an ownership stake in the original series, but the Netflix Original show isn't his first attempt in pushing for a new project based on Full House. In 2008, news broke out that he was working on a reunion movie, but most of the original Full House cast members weren't interested in reprising their roles, resulting in the movie going nowhere. However, Stamos was undeterred, and after his stint as Dr. Tony Gates in the NBC medical drama ER the actor revealed that he was working on another Full House film, but instead bringing back his other castmates, he wanted other actors to play the characters. In fact, he even had specific stars in mind to play the show's adult cast. In an interview, he revealed:

"I'm working on a movie idea, but it wouldn't be us playing us. I'm not 100% sure, but it would probably take place in the first few years. I see Steve Carell as [Bob Saget's character] Danny Tanner and Tracy Morgan as [Dave Coulier's] Joey Gladstone because he's funny."

Why John Stamos' Movie Plan Didn't Happen

Full House

The idea for a Full House film from Stamos obviously didn't come to fruition, and fans would wait seven more years for the Tanners to return on the screen. There's no given reason why the project didn't push through - Stamos didn't even mention it after initially floating the idea. Carell, Franco, and Morgan also never talked about the movie. Whether or not Stamos reached out to them is unknown at this point, it's also uncertain how far along the proposed project progressed before it was abandoned as there's no word about it still being in development.

Now, Stamos is busy focusing on wrapping up Fuller House. The Netflix show split the final fifth season into two parts - the latter of which is set to drop on the streaming platform in June 2020. As the whole family prepares for the triple wedding of DJ, Stephanie, and Kimmy, fans are looking forward to how the Full House spin-off will address the continued absence of Aunt Becky after Lori Loughlin was fired from the project because of her involvement in the college admission scandal.
