Josh Gad believes Frozen 3 won't happen unless the creative team comes up with a really good story. Disney struck gold with its 2013 release Frozen, an updated, musical take on the Snow Queen fairytale. Audiences were immediately enchanted by the tale of sisters Elsa (Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell), to the point where they boosted Frozen to a stunning worldwide box office total of $1.28 billion. A sequel was inevitable, and Frozen 2 arrived in 2019 to even bigger box office numbers. Since then, many have assumed that a third installment is on the way.
However, Frozen 3 isn't as much of a done deal as one might expect. Mere days after the second movie arrived in theaters, co-director Jennifer Lee stated she felt they had already told a complete story for Elsa and Anna. Disney remained mum on the prospect of a Frozen 3, and Gad, who voices loveable snowman Olaf, said in 2020 that it wasn't happening just yet. Now, more than a year later, it looks like nothing has truly changed on that front, though Gad thinks there's one major thing that could allow for another Frozen.
According to Dublin's 98FM, Gad says Frozen 3 can't happen unless there is a really good story in place. He believes there needs to be a good reason to bring everyone back and continue these characters' stories, and he trust those like Lee and fellow co-director Chris Buck to decide if it feels right. Gad says:
"Frozen 3 won't happen unless there’s a reason for Frozen 3 to exist. I trust this team with all my heart to believe that unless they have an amazing idea, there’s just no need. But I also know that the second they do have that idea, they’ll be the first ones to say 'let’s do it’. But right now, no Frozen 3."
Gad himself has remained busy even without a Frozen 3, as he's recently returned to voice Olaf for a new Disney+ series. It's clear that even if there are no more movies set within this universe, Disney has no intention of letting it go completely (no pun intended). Nevertheless, many fans would love to see another big screen adventure for Elsa, Anna, and the rest. Frozen 2 featured some game-changing twists for the two sisters, and it could be interesting to see the ramifications of them in another film.
At the same time, Gad's point that there needs to be a great story in place also makes sense. Franchises shouldn't keep churning out new movies just for the sake of doing so; there should be a genuinely exciting creative reason to revisit Arendelle and its people. Buck and Lee already found a way to do it for the sequel, and only time will tell if they can do the same for Frozen 3. There are numerous directions they could take the story if they want to, so the door isn't completely shut. For the time being, though, it's far from a sure thing.
