While Frozen 3 hasn’t been officially announced yet and there is no information about what its story might look like, one thing must happen based on the plot of Frozen and how it evolved in Frozen 2. Although Anna’s voice actor Kristen Bell did jokingly announce “with zero authority” that there would be a Frozen 3 during an interview in June 2022, no official news actually confirmed it. Still, as six years passed between Frozen’s 2013 release and Frozen II being theatrically released in 2019, it’s not unthinkable that Frozen 3 will eventually be announced, especially as many of Frozen’s stars said they’d be up to return for a third installment.

Frozen introduced the main characters and set up Elsa’s (Idina Menzel) journey of acceptance of her powers and her place as queen of Arendelle, offering a conclusive, fully-fledged, and satisfying story. Frozen 2, instead, built on the world of Anna and Elsa, offering some background on their parents’ history and Elsa’s magical powers. Despite still being centered on the two sisters, Frozen 2 developed Elsa and Anna as independent characters, showing their full potential as themselves and not only as two sisters supporting each other. Frozen 2’s ending brought them where they needed and always wanted to be, with Elsa finally able to learn more about herself and her powers free of the expectations of a queen’s duties, and Anna as Queen of Arendelle, a role she was born to fill as she always had exceptional people skills, care for her subjects, and a penchant for formal royal roles.

Whichever way Frozen 3 will further develop Anna and Elsa’s stories, it will surely involve another time jump. Three years passed between the end of Frozen and the beginning of Frozen 2. What happened between the films was detailed in books, short films, and one LEGO holiday special miniseries; each offering insight into the world of Frozen. Anna and Elsa's journies in both Frozen and Frozen 2 took place over the course of a matter of days, so it would make sense to check back in with the sisters after another significant passage of time.

What A Time Jump In Frozen 3 Would Mean For The Story

Frozen II Elsa Anna Kristoff Olaf and Sven

Frozen 2’s ending saw Kristoff (Jonathan Groff) finally ask Anna (Kristen Bell) to marry him, so Frozen 3 could show the couple well into their marriage. Kristoff was already named the Official Arendelle Ice Master and Deliverer at the end of Frozen, and with Anna being crowned Queen of Arendelle in Frozen 2 it's likely that he'd have more roles to take on as Prince Consort. Whatever their new life might turn out to be, it will definitely include Sven and Olaf (Josh Gad), who never left their side even before Elsa decided to split her time between the Enchanted Forest and Arendelle.

Elsa’s character development in both Frozen and Frozen 2 revolved a lot around her trying to accept and understand herself and her wishes. While Frozen 3 might finally make Elsa’s LGBTQ identity canon, one thing it will definitely continue exploring is her connection to magic and her journey to accept herself. The fact that Elsa chose to renounce her role as queen in favor of letting Anna become one didn’t just reflect her knowledge of her sister but also Elsa’s willingness to finally listen more to herself and her wishes and possibly even understand more about the origins of her magic and reconnecting to her mother’s heritage.

Were Frozen 3 to happen, many stories could potentially be explored. While waiting for Disney’s official announcement, comfort could be taken in knowing the sequel will contain a time jump. Having that will offer more insight into Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Sven, Olaf, and the rest of Arendelle and Northuldra, making Frozen 3 the sequel that can't be released soon enough.
