The idea of a third entry into Disney's popular Frozen franchise is exciting, but Frozen 3 would struggle to satisfy everybody. Frozen and Frozen 2 directly tackled how the relationship between two very different sisters can evolve while they try to find themselves and help each other. The third installment of Frozen would need to answer more profound questions surrounding Elsa's sexuality and how Anna can handle being the queen of Arendelle.

Frozen 2 co-director Chris Buck said shortly after the 2019 release that the two movies tell a complete story, and Josh Gad, the voice actor for Olaf, recently said that a third Frozen movie isn't yet in the works. However, Gad also indicated that it's still a possibility, and Disney is known for creating sequels when it's financially advantageous for them, like when they released Toy Story 4. Based on other Disney franchises, it would be a smart move for Disney to make Frozen 3, especially since Frozen 2 became the highest-grossing animated film of all time after its release in late 2019. Fans' hunger for more from the royal sisters hasn't seemed to slow down, which makes Frozen 3 a real possiblity.

The writers were successful in creating a satisfying arc with Elsa's journey of self-discovery and acceptance at the end of Frozen 2, but questions surrounding Elsa's role in the Enchanted Forest and Anna's future as Queen of Arendelle and the future of their relationship remain unseen. If the creators decide to move forward with Frozen 3, they need to mature Anna, Elsa, and Kristoff as they enter into adulthood while expanding upon characters like Olaf and members of The Enchanted Forest. All of this will need to be done without over-complicating the story. They will also have to make Anna and Elsa's diverging paths come back together organically while adding in new tensions and a potential villain. With all of these story threads, no matter what, fans will be left wanting something.

Frozen 2’s Ending Changes Anna & Elsa’s Stories

Anna and Elsa embrace

Frozen 2 left off with Anna and Elsa in two new situations. Elsa chose to stay in the Enchanted Forest, taking ownership of her role as the Fifth Element and embracing a new family. Elsa is no longer searching for herself or the origins of her powers, and now that she knows where she's from, Elsa's mystery may feel mostly over. For the first time in her life, she has the opportunity to focus on something outside of herself.

Both sisters have found where they feel like they belong, but they're living apart for the first time. While Elsa lives in the Enchanted forest, Anna is Queen of Arendelle, which could prove a challenge. After spending the first two movies searching for and helping Elsa, Anna will be in the castle without her and will have to take care of an entire kingdom. While Anna seemed destined to be Queen since Elsa’s Coronation Day in Frozen, it's unclear how she will function as a leader. Anna's story is still in question, and she has yet to search her own identity. After all, they both came from the same magical mother, so Anna must have her own questions.

What Fans Want from Frozen 3

Frozen 2 Vs Frozen

Fans want a mix of surprise and familiarity in Frozen 3, though there is some division about what to do with Elsa. While there are competing campaigns and debates over if Elsa should have a girlfriend, the most substantial argument is for Elsa to have a love story of some sort. Though a minority of fans want Elsa to remain single, giving her a love interest could create an opportunity for character growth in a third film.

Fans would also like to see a wedding in Frozen 3 for Anna and Kristoff. After watching their love story grow for two movies and Kristoff’s eventual proposal, the next step of their relationship feels inevitable. But in order for their nuptials to work as the climax for Frozen 3 a rift would potentially disrupt Anna and Kristoff to add the needed drama for an engaging film. A logical next step, too, is for Olaf to continue his self-discovery. Fans will want to see Olaf continue to be in Arendelle with Anna, but it's unclear how Olaf will survive without Elsa's magic. He has the personality of a child still figuring out the world and will need supervision from one of the sisters.

Frozen 3 will also need antagonists, and now that the characters from the Enchanted Forest are part of the story, they could provide the necessary conflict. Whether it's a villain from the Enchanted Forest or old characters like the trolls coming to cause trouble in Arendelle, fans are looking for a new way for new challenges for the sisters to take on.

Why Frozen 3 Will Be Controversial No Matter What

Frozen 2 Ending Explained

Regardless of how writers choose to evolve Anna and Elsa, the film will cause controversy in the industry and disappoint fans. Disney has disregarded the LGBTQ+ community for decades - if Elsa gets a boyfriend, there will be major backlash from the gay community and its advocates. On the other hand, if they choose to leave her single and continue her ambiguous sexuality, that will likely cause even loader uproar.

Fans would likely be disappointed if there is another journey focused mainly around sisterhood. It’s been done twice and would come across as stale. But there also needs to be a way of bringing the two together. One way to get around is pitting the Enchanted Forest and Arendelle against each other, potentially causing a rift between Anna and Elsa. Another way to bring them together is if something happens to Kristoff, and they need to work together to retrieve him. Regardless though, young fans would be disappointed to see Anna and Elsa not living in close proximity to each other and growing into adulthood. Anna and Elsa have strong personalities, and Frozen 2 left their stories open-ended enough to create a Frozen 3. They still have new adventures to seek out and need to find how to live without the comfort of the other always being around. Regardless of what happens with Anna and Elsa moving forward, the story will struggle to satisfy all its fans.
