The Frozen 2 trailer broke the all-time views record for an animated movie. Disney scored one of their biggest hits ever with the original Frozen, released in 2013. Not only was the film a massive commercial success (totaling $1.2 billion worldwide), it was also a critical smash and took home the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. With all that in mind, it was a foregone conclusion the Mouse House had a new franchise on their hands, and Frozen 2 was officially announced back in 2015. Fans have been waiting eagerly for the sequel ever since, and now it's only months away from theaters.
Though there's still a bit of time before Frozen 2 has its November premiere, Disney opted to get the hype train rolling early with the release of the first teaser trailer recently. The footage didn't reveal much in terms of plot details, but it did hint at an epic and emotional adventure for Anna and Elsa. Despite there being six years between installments, audiences remain as excited as ever to head back to this world, and there are numbers to back that up.
According to Deadline, the Frozen 2 trailer generated 116.4 million views during its first 24 hours online. That sets a new all-time views mark for an animated movie, topping Incredibles 2's 113.6 million views from last year. Avengers: Endgame holds the current all-time trailer views record with 289 million. Clearly, Disney has a way of connecting with mainstream audiences.
It shouldn't come as any surprise the Frozen 2 trailer drew this much interest. The original is the highest-grossing title for Disney's in-house animation department and became a bona fide cultural phenomenon thanks to its catchy soundtrack and memorable characters. In the time between features, Disney also smartly kept the Frozen property active and visible by producing a series of shorts to ensure the brand never faded from viewers' memories. Granted, not all of these went over well (see: Olaf's Frozen Adventure playing before Coco), but they helped fill the void as people waited for the next movie. What's more is that here had been rumors about Frozen 2 footage premiering since before Christmas 2018, meaning fans were on high alert for a preview. When it finally dropped, everyone rushed to check it out.
Obviously, this is a phenomenal start for the Frozen 2 marketing campaign and bodes exceptionally well for the film's box office prospects. Disney has the film well-positioned for another one of their patented massive box office runs, seeing that it will be the big family film at the multiplex over the Thanksgiving holiday. A number of the other high-profile releases in November, like Terminator 6, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, and Knives Out, will appeal to their own target demographics as a form of counter-programming to Disney's latest, meaning Frozen 2 should rival its predecessor in terms of box office gross when it's all said and done.
