The filmmakers behind Frozen 2 are finally opening up about whether or not a third installment in the Frozen franchise is in the cards. Six years ago, Frozen took the world by storm when it debuted in theaters around the world. The film went on to make $400.2 million domestically and took in a grand total of $1.2 billion at the worldwide box office. The monumental success of the film was a sure sign that a sequel would be made, and now it's officially out in the world.

The highly-anticipated sequel is set three years after its predecessor and explores what happened to Anna and Elsa's parents along with where Elsa's powers came from. Despite mixed reviews, Frozen 2 has already proven to be another smashing success for Disney. The film was initially predicted to have a $1oo million opening weekend and has already skyrocketed past those estimates. Frozen 2 has set an opening weekend box office record for Disney Animation, grossing $127 million in the U.S. during its debut. Not to mention, with this latest release, Disney also crossed the $3 billion mark domestically for the third time in its history. So, with these unbelievable numbers, will a third film soon be making its way into the franchise? The Frozen filmmakers are finally weighing in.

During an interview with CinemaBlend, filmmakers Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, along with producer Peter Del Vecho, opened up about the future of the franchise and how both Frozen and Frozen 2 helped close out the main character's storylines. Del Vecho explained that, when looking at these two films together, both Buck and Lee "have done an amazing job of weaving them as one full story," adding in that it "now feels like a complete journey." Lee went on to add that, "it feels complete to me," before pointing at Buck and saying "ask him in a year."

Frozen 2 - Elsa and Bruni

The success of Frozen 2 at the box office has been a much-needed boost of energy in what's been a bit of a quiet fall movie season. The box office has seen its fair share of flops this fall, but with the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker still on the horizon, it will surely be ending the year on a high note. The Mouse House will certainly be ending the year on a high note as well, following a tremendously successful pull of revenue from the box office this year along with the release of its triumphant new streaming platform, Disney+.

Considering how successful the animated sequel is already tracking to be, the possibility of a third film isn't entirely out of the question. But, since Frozen 2 serves as a perfect way to close Anna and Elsa's narrative, the filmmakers would truly have to come up with something worthwhile to have a third film make sense. Frozen 2 closes the chapters of these beloved characters in a lovely way. Hopefully, if a third movie does end up being made, it will find a way to take the franchise in an exciting new direction instead of rehashing something that's already been done.
