Frozen was a milestone achievement for Disney Animation, earning in a billion dollars in worldwide box office revenue, two Oscars, two Grammys, a Golden Globe, a chart-topping soundtrack and countless merchandise. Most of all, the movie won the respect of millions of people (women in particular), who appreciated directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee's refreshing choice to tell a princess story that focused on the bond between two sisters, rather a girl trying to win a prince charming.
With all those positives, its been near impossible to imagine that Disney would miss opportunity to launch a sequel film - but the only concrete evidence that the world of Frozen would continue was the upcoming animated short, Frozen Fever. Today however, it has been confirmed that Frozen 2 is indeed happening.
As has become the new custom, Disney executives chose to reveal official plans for a Frozen sequel in the business-oriented setting of an annual shareholders meeting in San Francisco today. As Variety reports, Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck are developing the project - which is interesting news, since just a few weeks ago, the two directors were reportedly denying rumors of Frozen 2, even going so far as to suggest a sequel might never happen:
Buck: “It’s been in the press that we are doing [Frozen 2], and we would ask each other, ‘Are we?’ They’d have a date and they’d have a cast and it was like, OK…”
Lee: “It all comes down to the story… Until we find our way into what’s next, emotionally, it will feel too big. We just finished the short two weeks ago. One year ago, it was a lot to even think about doing a short. We were quite tired. We don’t really know what it’s like to stop for a minute and think about what we want to do next.”
Buck: “There is a bit of that drop-the-mic thing. Just go, [drops mic] ‘I don’t know what else to do.’”
Oddly enough, we got wind earlier this week - prior to this official announcement - that Frozen 2 could be happening. While speaking to Big Hero 6 actress Genesis Rodriguez about a sequel to that Oscar-winning Disney franchise, Rodriguez let the following info slip about Frozen:
Screen Rant: Have they lined you up for a [Big Hero 6] sequel or anything yet?
Genesis: There’s rumblings of something else happening. I mean yesterday I just saw that it’s the third most grossing Disney animated feature, so this is huge for them. I doubt that they wouldn’t want to do another one. It was a huge success.
That’s typically the way they work.
Genesis: Right? But they are doing ‘Frozen.’ So, who knows? Maybe they’ll do something with ‘Big Hero 6.’
At the time we thought Rodriguez was referring to the Frozen Fever short - but maybe not...
In any event, Frozen 2 is now in the works. As for other announcements: Disney also released a lot of hot new details about plans for its Star Wars shared universe - read about all that new info by clicking the link below.
Frozen Fever will be attached to the new Cinderella film that's in theaters on March 13th. We'll keep you updated on the status of Frozen 2.
