Frozen 2 has officially become the third-highest grossing film of 2019 at the worldwide box office, while surpassing the original Frozen domestically. Upon its release in 2013, Frozen was a box office smash that notched a then-record opening for Thanksgiving weekend. It quickly became a cultural phenomenon, and a sequel was soon ordered. This year, Frozen 2 debuted to $130.2 million the weekend before Thanksgiving and scored the biggest global debut for any animated film.

The sequel reunites Elsa (Idina Menzel), Anna (Kristen Bell), Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), and Olaf (Josh Gad) as they venture north to an enchanted forest that has been held under a curse for years. It received generally positive reviews, scoring a 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, while fan responses were even better. Recently, Frozen 2 scored two Golden Globe nominations: Best Motion Picture - Animated and Best Original Song for Elsa's showstopper "Into the Unknown".

According to Box Office MojoFrozen 2 has officially reached $1.16 billion worldwide, making it the third-highest grossing movie of 2019. It has surpassed Sony's Spider-Man: Far From Homewhich reached $1.13 billion this past summer. The only films higher than Frozen 2 are now Avengers: Endgame ($2.79 billion) and The Lion King ($1.65 billion). It's unlikely that Frozen 2 will pass The Lion King, but it'll probably get a bit closer in the coming weeks.

Domestically, Frozen 2 is the fifth highest-grossing movie of the year with a current total of $410.7 million. This places it just above Frozen's final domestic total, which was $400.7 million. That was over the course of its entire box office run, while Frozen 2 has only been in theaters for five weeks. Its box office total is only going to increase going forward, especially since the period between Christmas and New Years is typically a busy movie-going time where films can flourish with long legs. Frozen 2 hasn't quite matched the worldwide total of the first installment ($1.27 billion), but there's a good chance it'll catch up by the end of its run.

The Frozen films have the rare distinction of being a franchise that gets bigger with each new movie. These days, it's more common for a new film in a series to make less than the ones that came before. Frozen 2 has proven to be a bona fide box office success, something that was sorely needed after a rough November which saw a lot of big films sink. It's also one of the reasons Disney has just capped off a record year where they produced 80% of the top box office films. While it's unclear if a Frozen 3 will ever come to light, there will be high expectations attached to it if it does.
