FromSoftware may be working on an Xbox exclusive sci-fi rpg at the moment with Dark Souls-like elements. Given the company's history of highly-difficult, albeit fair, gameplay, it's not a stretch to imagine this unreleased title sharing similarities with the Souls series. According to a report from Windows Central Gaming, the speculation is that Xbox is working with FromSoftware to develop a future Xbox-exclusive title.

This same report has Miles Dompier of Windows Central Gaming stating "I have heard some rumblings of a sci-fi FromSoftware title currently in pre-production, but for now its really hard to say if any of that is legitimate." Looking at its catalog of produced games, FromSoftware is the parent to many medieval fantasy games such as the Souls and King's Field series. In addition, Sekiro:Shadows Die Twice and the upcoming Elden Ring are both dark fantasy titles, which might initially deter the notion of a sci-fi title from this developer.

However, FromSoftware also originated the Armored Core franchise, which is based around piloting giant mechs. The success of this series gives reason to assume bridging the gap between fantasy and sci-fi worlds is completely doable. FromSoftware has spent a large part of its career refining its aesthetic and core gameplay mechanics across all titles. Something the company does very well is laying a good foundation for a game and then improving upon it via future releases. Showing its ability to successfully build upon and refine older titles like Dark Souls, FromSoftware might benefit from remaking some of their classics.

FromSoftware Plays The Long Game

Kings Field Feature 3

The King's Field and Armored Core series are a good example of FromSoftware's technique. There are four main King's Field games, a world-building game for PC of the same name, two PSP titles, and three mobile ports. As for Armored Core there are currently 15 titles, making it the studio's longest running series. These franchises showcase perfectly FromSoftware's approach to video game making, as the King's Field series clearly built the groundwork for all future RPG titles the developer would make moving forward, while constantly providing players with familiar-yet-new experiences along the way.

That being said, it's hard to say whether or not this new Xbox-exclusive game will lie in the fantasy or sci-fi genre, if it exists in the first place. If it does, it's possible that the game will have a similar structure to Dark Souls given the success of the series, not to mention Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. While each of these games are unique in their own right, they definitely share similar world themes and gameplay mechanics. Imagining a game similar to these but in the world of science fiction is not difficult, and might be a refreshing new take on the company's long line of fantastical RPGs.
