Fringe is winding down its third season on Fox, and there's some exciting news on this year's finale. Brad Dourif, known as Deadwood's Doc Cochran, will guest star in the season 3 finale.
Fans of Fringe have had a tumultuous few weeks following the ups and downs in the news. First the show hit an all-time ratings low, then beat the naysayers with a fourth season renewal. Ratings jumped up slightly the week after, as producers thanked Fox and viewers for their support. New episodes start next Friday.
Dourif has had a prolific if quiet career. His biggest early role was one of Jack Nicholson's fellow mental patients in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. He went on to play in Dune and gave voice to the homicidal doll Chucky in all five Child's Play movies. His most visible role was almost certainly the traitorous adviser Wormtongue in Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. He might be the only one who's not returning for The Hobbit.
Among dozens of small appearances on shows like Law & Order and Star Trek: Voyager, Dourif played the outspoken sawbones Dr. Amos Cochran on HBO's Deadwood. His portrayal of a moralist doctor caring for patients he personally detests was impressive, and he stood out in an already stellar series. He's also cast in the upcoming Priest.
So, who is Dourif playing on Fringe? There isn't much information available beyond the name of the character: Moreau. That brings to mind a certain mad scientist (they're thick on the ground in the Fringe Division) with his own island, but the show has already explored human-animal hybrids in previous episodes.
Strangely, casting for the Moreau character called for an English-speaking Japanese actor. Dourif is decidedly not Japanese, but you've got to admit his English is pretty good. Between Dourif's penchant for villain roles and the Moreau name, I'd wager he'll be an antagonist, and might even stick around for a few episodes in Season 4.
Fringe airs Friday nights at 9PM on Fox. New episodes return April 15th, and the finale is scheduled for May 6th.
