The official trailer for the upcoming Friends reunion special has finally arrived, showing Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer reminiscing about their time together on the show. For ten seasons, Friends was one of the most-watched shows on television, and it’s remained hugely popular in the years since its end. The Friends reunion is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max on May 27.

As with the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reunion that aired on HBO Max in 2020, the Friends reunion will be an unscripted event featuring the original core cast, and certain members of the supporting cast. Parts of the reunion special were filmed in front of a live audience, while others will involve the actors back on set, reliving their experiences on the show with one another. The reunion has been one of HBO Max’s most hyped exclusives since the streaming platform launched, and there’s been a lot of online fervor surrounding its release.

Fans can finally get a proper peek at the Friends reunion thanks to an official trailer from HBO Max. The footage shows the six stars doing trivia competitions about the show, reminiscing on the old sets, and discussing the series’ overall impact. Watch the Friends reunion trailer below.

Friends’ legacy is far from flawless. The series has earned extensive criticism in recent years for its tendencies toward homophobic, transphobic, fatphobic, and misogynistic jokes and storylines, as well as for its overwhelmingly white portrait of young adult life. Supporters have chalked these problems up to Friends having been produced in an era when such writing decisions were commonplace in pop culture. Others have argued that the show shouldn’t continue to be held up as an all-time great because of its problematic content.

Perhaps some of that complicated legacy will be addressed in the reunion special. Perhaps not. Either way, the trailer is loaded with what diehard fans seem to want – unabashed nostalgia, and a show of mutual love from the cast. The reunion special has sparked conversations about what other old shows could benefit from such an event, with The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco recently saying she would be exciting for a similar reunion somewhere down the line. The idea of peddling pure nostalgia certainly isn’t new, but HBO Max seems to be making a new business model out of it, with a Harry Potter retrospective also having been recently announced for the streamer. The Friends reunion premieres on HBO Max on July 27.
