Rachel was one of the most popular characters in Friends who goes through some brilliant progression. Going from someone who is very ditzy and happily spends all her father's money to being an incredibly successful woman in the business of her dreams.

However, while she is one of the funniest and sweetest characters in the show, Rachel isn't perfect. She often makes mistakes and does things that lead everyone to find her slightly irritating at times. But then to balance that out, there are tons of moments where she is left heartbroken and sad.

It's those ups and downs that help make Rachel and the other characters in Friends incredibly relatable. Nobody is perfect and the show highlights that. To prove that, in this list, we will reveal five times everyone felt bad for Rachel, and five times fans hated her.

Felt Bad: We Were On A Break

This list kickstarts with the most obvious time that people felt sorry for Rachel, which was the infamous "We were on a break" storyline. This was one of Friends' most emotional storylines and no matter which side of the argument fans landed on, there's no doubt that people felt bad for Rachel.

Even if they were on a break, it wasn't really an excuse for Ross to go and sleep with someone on the first available opportunity. It was obviously Rachel who got the short end of this deal and it was a moment that people felt bad for her, being one of the most talked-about moments from the show.

Hated Her: Teaching Joey To Sail

When Joey randomly bid too high in an auction and bought a boat, it was always going to end in a disaster. Rachel took the decision to teach him how to sail in order for him to make the most of his purchase. It sounded like a great idea and was Rachel simply being a good friend.

However, when they got onto the boat together, it didn't work out that way. Instead, she spends the entire time on the boat screaming at Joey because he doesn't understand what he is doing. Even though Rachel knows Joey isn't the brightest, she is cruel to him which people didn't like.

Felt Bad: Not Loving Joey

The whole Joey/Rachel romance was one that divided fans as many really enjoyed it and others felt it was forced and shouldn't have happened. However, it certainly brought some emotional moments to the show that wouldn't have happened without it.

One of those came when Joey initially tells Rachel about his feelings and she has to admit that she doesn't feel the same way. It's a heartbreaking moment and audiences all felt bad for her having to break his heart. Of course, they do eventually end up together for a brief time, but in this particular episode, that isn't clear.

Hated Her: Treatment Of Gunther

Gunther talks to Rachel in Friends

While Rachel and Gunther were obviously never going to end up being an item together, Rachel certainly didn't help the situation between them. It was clear that Gunther had feelings for her and instead of bringing an end to the situation in a nice way, she strings Gunther along throughout the entire show.

She manipulates him, using his feelings to her advantage. Whether it's making him hire Joey or buying her expensive cat, she doesn't treat him well and seeing Gunther's sad face after every counter they have made fans angry at Rachel.

Felt Bad: Barry's Wedding

Rachel sings Copacabana wirh Ross at Barry and Mindy's wedding in Friends

Despite the fact she ran out on her wedding with Barry right at the start of Friends, which led her to Monica and the rest of the group, she somehow made it onto the invite list for his wedding to Mindy. Even though she wasn't the main focus of the wedding, she still ended up being the centre of the attention.

Everyone at the wedding was busy making jokes about her and when she might run out on the wedding in what was clearly a very embarrassing moment for her. It was impossible not to watch the scene and cringe a little at the stick she was receiving from everyone.

Hated Her: Bonnie's Shaving

Christine Taylor as Bonnie in Friends

The Ross and Rachel saga caused a lot of pain throughout the series, and it wasn't always those two who felt the brink of it. A prime example came when she actively encouraged Ross' girlfriend, Bonnie to shave her head and go bald in order to try and split them up.

Even though Bonnie was quite the free spirit and was open to the idea of having the cut, Rachel really was the one that pushed to make it happen. The fact she was willing to do that just to get back with Ross wasn't her greatest moment.

Felt Bad: Saying Goodbye To Ross

When Rachel made the decision to move to Paris at the end of the show, it was one that caused a lot of emotional moments. Fans weren't sure what to make of it and her goodbye conversations with the group individually were incredibly sad.

However, the fact she couldn't even bring herself to talk to Ross because she cared that deeply about him was very emotional. It was a moment where audiences certainly felt bad for her, as she was in a very tough situation saying goodbye to someone she loves so much.

Hated Her: Dating Jean Claude Van Damme

Rachel Talks to Jean Claude Van Damme and asks him out for Monica in Friends

Rachel and Monica are meant to be best friends, but there are plenty of examples of Rachel not really being as loyal and trustworthy to Monica as she was to Rachel. A prime example of that is when they end up watching Jean Claude Van Damme on set nearby to their apartment.

Monica makes it really clear that she has a crush on him, and when the actor pays them some attention it is their lucky day. But can Rachel step aside for her friend? Absolutely not, instead, she goes off on a date with him herself.

Felt Bad: Ross Cutting Her Out

The relationship between Ross and Rachel was always the heartbeat of Friends, and even when they weren't together as a couple, they were great friends. Both of them loved each other, even if it was as friends, but when Ross made the decision to cut her out of his life for Emily, it was truly heartbreaking.

It was a decision that was clearly upsetting for both of them, but since it was Ross making the decision, it was tougher on Rachel. She was heartbroken and it created a moment where everyone certainly felt bad for her.

Hated Her: Flying To England

No matter what people thought about the marriage between Emily and Ross, it was clear that he wanted it to go ahead and that he loved her. So the fact that Rachel went to the wedding, flying all the way to England with the plan of confessing her love for Ross was a really bad moment.

Even though this is the couple that everyone wants to see happen, at this particular juncture it just wasn't right. Making this decision was a drastic one, and even on the plane, it was made clear to her how bad of a decision it was.
