Phoebe Buffay is the resident weirdo of the Central Perk gang of best friends in the phenomenally popular American sitcom, Friends. She is eccentric but kind, a terrible singer, but an honest, good soul, through and through.

Phoebe's character went from being bohemian and unpredictable to relatively more mature and stable. She also became one of the friends who could reason rationally, something she wouldn't have been capable of in the early years, and was an amazingly quick thinker.

Season 1: A Good Spirit

Phoebe Buffay Season 1

In season 1, Phoebe was the weird friend with the peculiar ideas and a sense of humor that not everyone understood. However, from the first season, Phoebe's generous nature and spirit were evident, as in when she gives away the extra money her bank had credited to her account and feels guilty about accepting the money she gets from the soda company for finding a thumb in the can.

She also proves that she is able to give up her own happiness for that of others when she breaks up with the awkward scientist, David, to allow him to pursue his research.

Season 2: The Need To Connect

Phoebe Buffay season 2

Season 2 is a lot about Phoebe's search for her roots and a need to bond with someone she could call her own. She regrets that she was married to an ice dancer for six years never knowing that he was in fact, straight.

She also goes hunting for her biological dad, although she can't muster the courage to walk into his home, and then meets her half-brother for the first time, only to find he is way weirder than she is. All the time, though, Phoebe is looking for a connection with a family and a home.

Season 3: Finding Family

Phoebe Buffay season 3

In season 3, Phoebe is able to spend a bit more time with Frank Jr. and even manages to trace her biological mother. Phoebe's search to find a corner where she belongs continues, as she re-imagines Monica's dollhouse in her own adorably weird way, and gets annoyed when her efforts are snubbed.

It seems that she is in a stage in her life when she feels financially secure but needs someone to call family.

Season 4: A Huge Commitment

Phoebe Buffay season 4

Season 4 is probably one of the most crucial periods in Pheobe's life, as she readily agrees to give her half brother and his wife the biggest gift of their lives by bearing their children.

Phoebe commits to Frank Jr. and Alice by offering to carry their baby for them and, in fact, ends up getting pregnant with triplets. The gesture showed Phoebe to be one of the kindest of the friends, with a heart of gold.

Season 5: Moving On After A Sacrifice

Phoebe Buffay season 5

Phoebe doesn't get to keep one of her brothers' triplets as she had hoped and is forced to say goodbye to the little babies in one of the most moving episodes of the series.

However, she is strong enough to move on and even winds up with a man she thinks she truly loves, until her firm principles and natural humanity lead her to be abhorred when Gary, her new cop boyfriend, causally shoots and kills a bird. Phoebe also takes the initiative to better educate herself by enrolling in a literature class, which shows her keen interest in pursuing an education, something her traumatic childhood deprived her of.

Season 6: A Good Friend

Phoebe Buffay season 6

Phoebe moves in to share rooms, temporarily, first with Joey and then with Monica, after Rachel burns down their apartment.

She is able to make a sacrifice for Rachel, giving up Monica's beautifully kept, clean room for Joey's rather gross lifestyle, when she believes that she had, by mistake, blown up the apartment, although she gets Rachel to change rooms once it's established that the fire was her fault. Phoebe's sense of right and wrong and her strong conscience come to the fore here.

Season 7: A Sacrifice Again

Phoebe Buffay season 7

In season 7, Phoebe's old flame David visits NYC, just for one night, from Minsk, and the two meet up briefly. Although David clearly adored her and the two had amazing chemistry, once again, Phoebe lets him go.

For those who aren't aware, Phoebe had originally intended to reunite with David in the final season, until Mike Hannigan came along and was simply too sweet a person not to end up with.

Season 8: The Right Man

Phoebe Buffay season 8

In season 8, Phoebe is trying to find the man of her dreams and has a spate of hysterically funny experiences. She also attempts to date her twin sister Ursula's ex-lover, which ends miserably, but thanks to Phoebe's indomitable spirit, she keeps going, waiting for her dream man to show up.

In fact, one of the main things about Phoebe's personality that is highlighted throughout her journey is her ability to face struggle and overcome failure.

Season 9: In Love

Phoebe Buffay season 9

In season 9, Phoebe meets the man of her dreams quite by accident, when Joey sets her up with one random Mike from Central Perk. The two connect instantly, but unfortunately, they realize that they want different things from their relationship.

Confusion arises when David, who had left for Minsk, comes back and becomes Mike's rival in seeking Phoebe's hand in marriage. Phoebe is now mature enough to realize the gravity of the situation and stops leading David on.

Season 10: The Mature One

Phoebe Buffay season 10

By the final season, Phoebe Buffay is probably one of the most mature of the friends, although she still holds on to her charmingly weird ways. She gets her dream romantic wedding on the street, which is apt, seeing how she has had a past of living on the street.

In the finale episode, it is Phoebe whose quick thinking allows Rachel to get off the aircraft headed for Paris, although Ross still fails to see her since he and Phoebe arrived at the wrong airport. From being slightly irritating and a strange oddball, Phoebe evolves into one of the smarter, more rational of the friends and is definitely the most human of them all.
